Went in 1st instead of 3rd!

I did a search but didn't find anything.
I just put headers and I was trying to see if they made a difference so I went WOT in 1ST, 2nd and .... 1st instead of 3rd. The whole car shook up, mostly the rear which kind of jumped, it felt like it locked up or something. I quickly depressed the clutch. I testdrove the car after and it felt fine and there was no smell or noise.
What should I check? Do you think she's fine?
Please, I am really worried.
Thanks,
Jacques

It's fine. Might want to get a short throw shifter for better shifting. People tend to like the Pro 5.0 or the B&M.

I got one of the first Hurst Shifters in the early days 1995, it didn't come with bump stops. I'm good with the shifting but when I let friends drive, they get excited and over-shift which hurts the tranny. Get a short throw with bump stops...

The T56 has internal stops. You're not hurting the tranny by overshifting. Technically you can't overshift with a T56.

You got axle hop or "brake hop" because the engine was trying to slow down the car while it was trying to speed up the engine.
Declutching was a very good idea. You probably didn't hurt anything in the engine when it overreved, but keep an ear open for strange noises.

That may be true, but one of my buddies jammed it into 3rd hard and I saw the shifter slide forward. He got out of the car and I drove it around the neighborhood. From that point forward, 3rd gear was a grind. So I took it to GM and they said that something "slid" inside the trans which caused it to not extend the shift fork past the synchromesh.

I've done that a couple times at the track, it's embarrasing! Instead I went from 3-2 instead of 3-4. You know pretty much right away, just pop the clutch back in like you did. It IS a good way to **** up your engine, but hopefully you caught it quick, and like mentioned keep your ear out for noises.

Another shifter is a good idea. Mine kind of "sticks" when pushed over to the left or right. I want one that has strong enough springs or whatever to put it back in center. That way you don't have to 'find' 3rd, just slamming the stick forward at a right angle it'll spring to the right and your hand will continue to move it up into 3rd.

Missed 3-4 shift = two broken pushrods. No other damage that I can tell. I had ball end hardened pushrods. The car ran after the incident. I drove it for over 200 miles. When we got back to check for damage, pushrods came apart as they were pulled out. I couldn't believe they stayed together.

Do you think I should check my pushrods?
What is involved? Just removing the valves covers and see if the rokers are still tight?

I did the same thing about 2 weeks after I did the T56 conversion. I was racing a Mustang at a light and threw it back into 1st. Oddly enough I still beat him....sort off knew the guy, and he really couldn't drive a standard to save his life!

I thought I broke something, but all was well. God bless the rev. limiter.

To check pushrods:
Remove valve covers
Remove rockers
Remove pushrods and check for bent or broken ones
If broken, retrieve pieces and replace with new
Reinstall and adjust lash

Less than an hour to check, more if you have to fix anything.

You're most likely OK. Many people miss shifts and it usually doesn't break anything. I was just lucky.

I've done that about....4 times already. going from 1st instead of 3, and going to 3rd insteadof 4th. Nothing wrong with the engine so far, knock on wood. Once I get my 1.6 RR, we'll find out if we did any kind of damage to the engine.

I will try that as soon as can. I am just not looking forward to have to adjust the valve lash hearing how people seem to have problem doing it.

Yeah rev limitier can't do much when your tires are making the enign ego but if you have LT1 edit, zero out all the tables past 6900rpm or so so it shuts it off. better then having fuel/ignition still in there, could cause detonation or something
