Welding oil pickup/screen to pump?!
The guy at the parts store yesterday told me i would have to put a tack weld on my oil pickup to keep it from coming off the oil pump, i have never heard of this, nor have i done it to motors in the past...its a nice tight fit, you cant get it in with your hands, so i dunno what the deal is?!!?!?
Alot of people (including myself) tack weld the pick-up to the pump cover just as added assurance that it wont come off. If you do this remove the bypass spring while youre welding to remove the chance of it getting welded in its bore.
I've heard it b4, I think it's just added insurance more than anything, more of a just incase thing, that would keep it from falling off in more or less all situations, preventing catastrophic engine failure.
Ive done it on all the motors I have built. My original pump and pickup tube came apart in mt LT1. If you do a search on it you find out that it is not an uncommon problem. Many people have had this problem. I believe it should be done for the added assurance and protection against it falling off and potentially destroying an engine!
The first pump I modded, was the last pump with a welded pickup/pump body. I consider a brkt. welded to pickup tube, which is then BOLTED to pump body, to be superior, and safer.
I have seen that quite a bit as well. I hardly do any mods to my pumps (just smooth the holes where the oil flows through and add some anti chatter grooves). But I guess if you have an expensive pump with alot of work in it, welding onit would be silly. I allways use the Mellings stock replacement, I can get those for about 15$ so I'm not out much if its messed up.
