? Weight of stock LT1 pistons ?

Ok... simple question with a hard to find answer or at least I searched several places & could not find it.

Does anyone know the weight of the stock LT1 pistons?

Thanks!

I'm tearing a LT1 core apart here soon and I wanted to check a few things on it. I might be able to get the mass of the pistons for you.

Why do you want to know? Its definately more than a aftermarket one.

I had a feeling you might be one of maybe 2-3 people to respond

I'm just curoius... I will be weighing the TRW pistons that come in the Summit rebuild kit & some SRP 138801 pistons soon & just wanted to compare.

Thanks!

Re: ? Weight of stock LT1 pistons ?

I would look at the Mahle Pro Packs. Better setup and they make more HP than a SRP.

464g for a 4.030 x 5.7" rod and stock stroke

But if I was going into a motor I would just get aftermarket forged I beams in 6" lenght and run a shorter lighter piston anyways. It's about 35g's lighter to do that.

The Mahle's are indeed a bit lighter...and better ... and more expensive

I think SRP has 495 or 497g for the part number I listed on their website. I'm pretty sure the TRW's are quite a bit heavier. I'm not using the TRW's but a friend of mine just ordered the kit so I figured while theyre accessable I'd weigh 'em just to have the info on hand & to see if they were a close match to the OE piston weight. I recently tossed about 40 stock pistons in the dumpster & now I wish I had some laying around still.

I dunno...

In absolute terms, sure. But they also come in a pack with rings and pins, and the skirts are friction coated.

Personally, I think they're a good value and already have the set going into my next rebuild.

Good point on the rings being included & the price issue

I'm using them in my rebuild... although not that experienced, they are nice items. Say on the same engine making x hp/tq, what difference would that 35 grams result in? I know its alot less mass to throw around when you are dealing with high g's etc... but one of you equation guys. ?? What would this result in? x% increase in power? x% increast in the rate of time it took to rev up... things like that.

Your not going to see much in terms of that. Basically it's going to make the rods and crank last longer because there is less force acting on them.

The mahle's for my 383 X 6.0 are 406g....which is withen 5g of the comparable wiseco pro-tru. Accounting for quality and price, the mahle's are the best deal out there.

A buddy of mine is dropping some stuff off at a machine shop today & is bringing a stock piston with him. I will post the weight when I hear from him

My friend just got back from the machine shop... The verdict is in. 532g for standard bore OE LT1 piston.

Re: ? Weight of stock LT1 pistons ?

Joe, I have to come clean on the stock LT1 piston grams, (made by Mahle I see cast in my piston). I took it to the machine shop and the owner didn't have his scale but he was confident he could find the weight in a SpeedPro catalog that had all the piston weights. He was certain that it is 532g for a stock standard bore LT1 piston by looking in his book. So I didn't actually have it weighed.
Thing I learned today was that Mahle is the OEM for the LT1 piston.

Karl
