water pump shaft seal on timing cover

How to get the seal on without messing up the seal? When putting the seal on, the inside rubber seal wants to turn inside out. I cant seem to get it on without bending the seal inside. This can't be this hard. Any ideas?

thanks

Clean up the coupler and slide the seal on it or get a deep socket that is the same diameter of the wp shaft sealing surface. Butt whatever you use up against the shaft and slide the seal onto the shaft.

Like Shoebox said, just sand down the coupler and slide on the seal (see pic below). Then, slip the coupler/seal onto the waterpump drive, and use a 3/4" deep socket OVER the coupler to hammer the seal into the timing cover. Dont forget to use a little bit of oil on the wp driveshaft to help the seal slip into place, and install a new o-ring once it's installed (I use a sharpie pen-cap to help slide on the o-ring)...

and make sure you are using a seal from the dealer or one that looks like the old seal. I tryed using the felpro seals that came in the gasket set I had and they were very low quality, did not work well and was imposible to install with out fliping inside out.

coupler

Just use the coupler that is there for the WP. I also used a bit of electrical tape and a dab of oil to ensure even smoother transition.
Also about the quality of the felpro seal, its the same as the GM. I ordered a WP and Opti seals from GM at the same time as when I bought the felpro timing cover gasket set. I bought the GM pieces to have as extras in case I screwed the job up the first time. Well, the seals are EXACTLY the same between felpro and GM. They even have the same stampings on them. They both use the same vendor for them, whom ever that may be (National). If you are doing the whole set then get the felpro, you'll be fine. I should mention, however, the two new seals (GM & felpro) were both different than the original that I removed.
