water pump seal question

water pump seal question

hi,
I got one question regarding two o-rings on the water pump shaft.
What are they for ? , Are they necessary ?
I think only water pump seal this shaft, Am I wrong ?

They are to hold the coupler in place and keep dirt out of the connection.
