water pump question?
water pump question?
I drive a 93 z28 camaro.
The other day my serpentine snapped, with the loss of power steering and alternator.
I noticed the water pump, which usually has a belt powering it, did not, it doesnt even have a pulley. Its the first time ive ever seen that kind, im not huge on engines, just know basic stuff. I talked to someone, and he said it was an electric water pump, or.. it was powered by the driveshaft.
Im just curious if anyone knows what im talking about, and if its standard on a 93 camaro.

It is turned by a gear on the other side of the timing cover. The gear is turned by the cam gear which is then turned by chain from the crank.
A few FYIs on the water pump:
It is a decent set up although some convert it to an electric pump.
The other issue that has occured are normal wear and tear to the seal behind the water pump to the timing cover. It is paper and sometimes tears and leaks oil. If you have a mystery leak up front then you may want to check there.

I believe it's technically called the water pump driveshaft coupling.
