water pump driveshaft seal duestion
water pump driveshaft seal duestion
ok whats the proper way to get this seal in without messing it up, and getting it to seal. i've replaced it twice now, and the first time i put it on and it ripped, so the second time i looked at an engine in my garage and saw both rubber seals are pushing out so i pushed the inside one out and got it on. its been about a month since i done that and its been leaking since, progressively getting worse can someone chime in on my dumbness
thanks george

You can pre-stretch the seal with a socket. I found a pen cap from a large Sharpie marker that's the right size to act as a rap to guide the seal onto the water pump drive gear. Oil up the ID of the seal. Make sure the tinming chain cover is clean, oil free.
Re: water pump driveshaft seal duestion
Make sure the timing cover is already installed on the engine first. When I put the seal on the cover, I slipped the seal over a deep well socket(a little oil on the socket doesn't hurt) that is similar in size to the shaft the seal will be riding on. With the seal still on the socket, place the open part of the socket over the splined shaft. You should now be able to simply push the seal on and the lip won't roll over.
Re: water pump driveshaft seal duestion
The easiest way I've done it, is to remove the timing cover and press the new seal in. Then take the waterpump drive coupler, clean it up, and slide it through the waterpump seal, backwards, so the lip doesn't fold.
Then take the cover, with the coupler hanging in the seal, and line it up with the front of the engine; using the coupler as a guide. Once you have the coupler slid onto the drive gear, just slide the cover into place.
The waterpump drive coupler is the exact same size as the drive shaft portion the seal rides on. This makes it very easy to install without fliping the lip, and without the need to stretch the seal out at all.
