water pump drive shaft o-rings

Why is there 2 small o-rings on the water pump drive shaft, to help with leaks... to keep shaft in place when installing water pump...??? just wondering.

I'm going to guess that they are there for stabilzation of the coupler. Similar kind of thing on the vented opti drive.

I think its to help keep moisture, coolant or any type of contaminates out of the splines so it doesn't rust or anything like that.
