want to install a cam, car has over 100k

I want to install a hot cam kit in my car, my question is since my car has 110k miles on, do I need to rebuild the engine?

No, Make sure and change your cam bearing(s) though.

No need to rebuild... It's probably not a bad idea to replace bearings, but it's not really needed. I think rod bearings go before cam bearings, depending on how high you rev. It's a gamble either way. I'd say if you have the $$, rebuild that sucka.

FWIW, I've never heard of cam bearings fail after cam installs. It's always been a main.

The cam bearing towards the front will be the worst of them all, just check them out to find out what kind of condition they're in.

110k.... if you got the money, refresh it. Otherwise I would say you will be alright as long as it's done correctly.

Re: want to install a cam, car has over 100k

I have the Hot Cam Kit in my car and I can say from experience that its a decent, mild cam that can be replaced in almost any LT1 as an upgrade, even in the 100k mileage range.

One thing you might want to do is get a new set of lifters to go with the kit, as they are not included. I have the Pro Magnums, but I have heard warnings against them, so either go stock or maybe Crane. Besides that, your bottom end should have no problem. The Hot Cam only makes more power a hundred or so higher RPM then the stock cam, so it won't strain much more on high revving.

If you follow the other posters advice and do go for a rebuild, you would probably want to go with a bigger cam to utilize the stronger bottom end.

However, I would recommend ditching the hypertech and getting a real custom tune. A new cam is way beyond what a hypertech can do in terms of idle, afr, fuel tables, etc. I didn't really notice the full capability of the cam until I got a tune.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions

You shouldn't have any problems, just make a habit of keeping everything clean during the install.

Re: want to install a cam, car has over 100k

The only thing you will need are gaskets

Intake
Valve cover
Water pump and O-rings
Timing Cover
I ripped my oil pan gasket taking the timing cover off, you might need it if you do the same.
Opti spark O-rings
Coolant
Oil and filter
Valve guide seals (optional but recommended)

I think that is everything you need.

Considering the affordable prices of both a stock replacement timing chain and a new set of hardened pushrods, it would be worth doing.
