Want To Guess My Power (rebuild)?

Sorry if you hate these threads, but if you can give me an idea I'd appreciate it.

If I don't have enough information, I apologize, I visited the machine shop and was told a lot of different stuff, and I don't know motors very well. And some of this may change, they just got the engine apart. Needs a new crank and new block.

-Cam - 220 (i'm told stock is 180)
-Bored over .20 or so.
-Port and polish work
-Stock heads - re-worked
-New (stock) valves
-Forged pistons (unknown specs) - said my compression would be bumped up a little.
-Shorty Headers
-3" catback
-Cai
-Possibly a tune, maybe a "Superchip"

BTW....do you know if I require a tune for this mild a setup?

Is that enough info?

Thanks in advance.

what cam exactly, and why forged pistons? waste for a mild set up like that. shorty headers are a waste, and yes u need a tune, sounds like you are getting taken for a ride

Ok, I'll try and get more information, heres some things I left out:

Forged pistons and molly rings.

Crane Cam - I'll try and get specs.

Machine work - Balance, Blueprint, bore and hone, mild portwork on heads, rebuild heads, turn crankshaft, resize rods.

Shorty headers are the only thing I can use in CA, we have strict smog regulations here, and this is a daily driver. Soon, they are putting into effect a law in which any visible smoke during the test is a fail.

Why do you think I am being "taken for a ride".

More details on the cam as well as some ideas on what kind of head work is going to be done are needed to give a rough estimate. Is everything else staying the same or are you upgrading other things such as the rocker arms, throttle body, ect.?

Welp, looks like I made this thread a little early. I've been real busy at work, and it's usually pretty noisy where I work and people tell me I break up too, so I haven't been able to call the project manager of my build, I am trying to get his email from someone else I know at the shop tonight. I'll probably see if I can sit in the office and call him tomorrow.

I believe nothing was said on rocker arms, but I've been wanting to ask him how much a new set of performance ones would cost and a few other details. Other than what I mentioned, most things are staying the same. I will get a 52MM TB later on, or port the current one, whichever will work better with my combo. They suggested a Superchips chip/programmer, but I think a custom tune (pcmforless, madz28) would be better.

Sorry for the early thread, then. Expect details tomorrow, I'll bump this thread or delete and make a new one.

Thanks though.

It all depends on what the heads flow and the camshaft...I would say 350 or so at the wheels......

should be a pretty nice smog set-up......

Stay away from the programmer, that will be useless in trying to tune a motor with a cam and head work anyhow. The mail-order tune is the best bet.

My dad came home and he just told me the guy said the same thing - I'd have to tune it all the time and the one on the shelf is overkill for my setup anyways.

And wow, one of the guys not involved in the build said the LT1 they just did put 340 to the wheels....I didn't believe him. Wow, that's a big leap. They actually used the last guys' combo as a guide and mimicked most of it.

Can't wait to tell you the numbers when I get them, thanks for the replies.

220 cam sounds good, see if you can upgrade to the 3/4 race though.
I'm just messing w/ you. Here's a quick run down on the things you've heard and what was actually said. might give you a good starting point for some questions.
anyone that knows more feel free to slap me and insert a correction.

find out the full specs on the cam, you are looking for numbers like intake and exhaust lift, these should be anywhere from .480 to .570, any lower is a very close to stock cam, any higher is way too big for stock rebuild. Next is duration, there's actual and then @.050, most people talk about @.050. which is probably where your 220 comes from.

.20? Actually its 20 over, referring to .020" making the bore 4.020"

stock heads-reworked & port and polish go together, find out what this entails. reworked to me means freshened w/o any performance enhancements at all. port and polished means $700+ of work w/ the intent of finding more power.

the tune will be determined by the amount of compression you've gained and the size of the cam. follow up w/ madz28 or some of the other tuners on here.

The cam is a crane #104224 that has 214 intake 220 exhaust duration @.050 lift with a .452 intake .465 exhaust lift. The powerband is 2000-5500 rpm.

This apparently won't require a tune, but will require an adj. fuel pressure regulator.

wont nd the adj. regulator either. the MAF should be able to take care of it.

It would be the other way around. Did the shop suggest this to you?
