Vert - Hydraulic Pump Broke!

Well the "pump" part is actually still working... But i'm not sure If i can repair it. First off the part which broke is on the passenger side of the pump.

The pump is connected to a tiny metal fitting connecting it to what looks to me like a metal cylinder. The metal cylinder part must have gotten hit by something heavy in my trunk (car jack i think ) and busted the metal fitting in half! So the metal fitting is broken with one piece stuck in the pump, and the other half of hte piece is stuck in the cylinder Y pipe thing.

I know not everyone has a vert but am hoping someone can help me out with some info here:

Any ideas on how i can get these pieces out? Theyre really stuck in there...
How much is a new pump?
Any other suggestions?

It really sux if i have to throw out the pump even though its working fine, just because a piece of metal is screwed in and wont come out

First off I would pull the pump out of the trunk so you can work on it to get the broken parts off. If it is just the metal fittings that are broke, go to a hardware store and match up the thread pattern. Then it is simply putting it back in and hooking up the new fittings.

On a side note how in the hell did the tire jack get to that elevation to smack the pump Might I suggest less sh*t in your trunk, or else getting a hardtop

Well first off the "Car Jack" Is a hydraulic floor jack and second I just had a toobox, the jack and the jack stands in my trunk The jack slid out from where i thought i had secured it on the way to my gf's house were I work on my car... probably on a turn.

I have the pump already out, it was leaking fluid everywhere. The problem is the broken piece is stuck in the pump, the fitting broke off flush with it.. I really cant get it out at all the other half of the broken piece is in the valve type thing, but has a bout 1/4 inch of the broken side sticking out. I've tried getting that out with a good set of pliers but still no joy

Re: Vert - Hydraulic Pump Broke!

Well got it all fixed today. Went to 2 GM dealerships, 1 autoparts store, my mechanics shop and home depot What a day.

I had my mechanic remove the brass fitting by tapping in a easy out, got the sheared off piece out no problem. The 2nd easier piece was just a matter of vice grips and a bit of twisting.

A new vert Pump for a 95Z Camaro is 1300 Cdn (roughly 900ish US). Thats the price the dealership gets it at, they mark up from there. Regular price is 1600 cdn! Once i got the fittings out i was easily able to find a replacement part at the parts store, but finding information on the hydraulic fluid was a bit more difficult.... Eventually I was directed to another GM dealership and had a wise old mechanic come out. He took my pump and smelt it, popped open a bottle of steering fluid, smelt that and said "here you go, this smells like the right stuff". So off I went and put the smell tested fluid into my 1600$ pump, works great now , took a few cycles to get all the air out of the cylinders.

I recommend anyone with a vert find some way to reinforce the pump area; That or just not put unsecured hydraulic jacks on top of your toolbox while driving

Hey I have a incredibly stupid ? ( Sorry for hijacking ) but there is that little valve by the pump, its a on off valve on a line, that turns like 90*. What the hell is that for? I never got an owners manual with my car lol. And the top worked fine with the thing where it was so I never closed it.

I'm within an hour of Washington State (Vancouver) , or 4 hours from Seattle. Amazingly.. right at the border it all becomes permafrost and everyone wears tukes every day of the year. You can watch everyone go hunting caribou and seals, eh I really enjoy the top out here all year round, in the winter with the heater on its really quite nice inside. Although it does rain a lot, i like to enjoy the sun when it does come to show itself

Here's how the pump works, one side of the pump is the feed side, it pushes fluid out. The other side is the return side, it sucks in the fluid when the other side is running. Depending on the polarity the pump switches direction for when you raise and lower the top, which means the return line becomes the feed and the feed line becomes the return. Just for explaning it im going to say left is Return and right is Feed.

The left side has two return pipes, one to each side. The right has two feed pipes one to each side as well. Between the two sides is the pipe and valve connecting the sides... the valve is normally closed. So if you run the pump with the valve open, fluid is free to flow from one side to the other, this means that the top, if it were half way open, would slowly come down until its resting in the down position. If you run it with the valve open the top wont move since its just recyling the fluid from the return to the feed side.

If your pump seizes when the top is down, you wont be able to move it back very easily at all since theres nowhere for the fluid to flow except back through the motor. By opening the valve the fluid can flow, allowing you to move the top manually up or down.
