valvetrain ?s
Okay so i did a search and from the threads i read the best springs for my Cam are gunna be comp springs, specifically 986-16 (the ones recomended with the cam) Now that we've got that outta the way here are my qwuestions.
1-Can i run these springs with 1.6 RR?
2-What RR would be the best match for the springs? ( i assume comp pro magnums but i want everyones thoughts)
3-Do the 986-16 springs come with all the retainers, keepers stc?
4-Do i need and machine work inorder for the springs to be installed?
5-About how much HP (if any) can i be looking at here?(got stock springs now, haven't been driving the car at all just letting it idle to to the fact that the stock springs just aren't compatable with that cam)
6-With new VS i'll probably be getting new pushrods, anyone have any recomendations (im thinkin Comp again)
7-And finally Who offers the best deal on all these valvetrain accessories? Im thinking i'll go through summit but if anyone knows if Thunderracing or anyone else has a sale on now please let me know!!
Any comments/suggestions appreciated!

1. Yes
2. CC Pro Magnums are a good choice, while your doing Rockers and springs, I would also recommend replacing the Lifters, and I would also go with Comp Cams Pro Magnum Lifters.
3. No, u will need to order a separate retainer and guide kit.
4. No, these springs aren't not too thick that u will need any head machining or mill work.
5. What cam do u have? hard to say how much HP u'll gain, but u will have more lift at higher RPM and less possibility of valve float.
6. Cold Forged Push Rods by Comp Cams are nice, but more than likely they are unneccesary. But if u plan on some major motor work in the future and an even more aggressive cam, it wouldn't hurt to have them.
7. www.cmotorsports.com < Where I bought mine. GREAT prices and good shipping. In all honesty, I believe they are one of the best companies to deal with. HIGHLY recommended, call them up.

-Can i run these springs with 1.6 RR?
First you must figure out yout total lift.
take the cam lobe lift and multiply by 1.6
then get the spring spec sheet. it will say "Coil Bind"
ie. spring installed height = 1.600 coil bind at 1.000
that means if you cam has .600 lift the coils wil bind. Different cam manufactures say you need different clearances, I've seen .050 to .080. so with the springs in my example you could run .520
All of these specs can be gotten from comp cams.
You also need to be sure the springs you are getting have the same installed height as your stock springs. otherwise you will need to machine the spring seats deeper to accomodate them.
2-What RR would be the best match for the springs? ( i assume comp pro magnums but i want everyones thoughts)
I used Crane because GM used crane on the LT-4. ihad a buddy who was sponsered by both in circle track racining (at different times) he said for normal street / srip racing cranes are easier on the speongs because they are lighter and have less friction. = mabye 1 more hp. For really heavy duty applications he reccomended thr pro mags.
3-Do the 986-16 springs come with all the retainers, keepers stc?
They do not come with them when you oder them, you have to get those separately, and you stock ones wont work, I believe those have special retainers for 10 degree locks like my 987s do.
4-Do i need and machine work inorder for the springs to be installed?
Mabye. I would hope not for you sake since you have the motor togather, it was very close but I elected to get the machine work done.
5-About how much HP (if any) can i be looking at here?(got stock springs now, haven't been driving the car at all just letting it idle to to the fact that the stock springs just aren't compatable with that cam)
Probibly none, but you will save you pistons from hitting your valves, which would cost you alot of horsepower. unless you are going from 1.5 rockers to 1.6. that may get you 5 -10 more with ported heads.
6-With new VS i'll probably be getting new pushrods, anyone have any recomendations (im thinkin Comp again)
Cromoly 7.2 (stock size 5/16) pressed tips with oiling hole. thats what I run, and they were only like 35$
7-And finally Who offers the best deal on all these valvetrain accessories? Im thinking i'll go through summit but if anyone knows if Thunderracing or anyone else has a sale on now please let me know!!
I used summit.

I hope that helps....

That clears up some gray areas i had about my valvetrain! So i guess i'll be getting 986-16 springs and ordering retainers and keeps and going with Crane Gold 1.6 Self-aligning RR
Thanks again!
