Valvetrain Labor...

If I were to change my cam, valve springs, timing chain, lifters, roller rockers, and pushrods... what would be a round about price on just labor? I was told 1k by someone, that doesn't seem high? 14 hours worth of labor?

Just do it all yourself. You'll be glad you did and it'll only cost around $100 for gaskets and fluids. You can't put the cam in wrong just follow the chilton book and you'll be fine.

Re: Valvetrain Labor...

How much of a boost you think i'll gain from the cam install without LT's? I am doing it this way only because I need to change my lifters so if money has to be dumped somewhere, I figured this way would be the way.

Its the XE 227/233 with a .563/.569 duration. But I heard this cam goes awesome with stock heads... so YaY

I read somewhere like 310rwhp and 330lbs of torque without the LT's.

Well if you were to use that cam you would definetly have to change out the valve springs. They only handle .550 lift max stock. Depending on the setup you could see a 25-40 rwhp gain.

Around here its about $400-$450 but I think the price will vary considerable depending on where you are.

Re: Valvetrain Labor...

It is 14 hours of book labor for sure. I'd do it for $250

Stock springs can't even handle that. I've never seen specs on them but i bet they can't handle anything over .500 lift. Stock springs can't handle the hotcam and its rated at .525 with 1.6's.

Check around the local fbody clubs. I'm sure you could find someone to do it for $300 or less. Once you've done it 3 or 4 times, its pretty simple. I could do it in 5 or 6 hours if I really booked, the longest part is swapping the springs.

Just to clear something up about the stock valve springs. They do handle up to .550 lift. I'm using the 306 cam on it and been running it like this for 1 year now. .510 .540

I assume you mean .563/.569 lift - and i also assume that's with 1.6 ratio rockers???

To answer your question - $1,000 sounds about right to me. When i swapped my cam/springs/lifters/torque converter first time around it took me over 20 hours. I could probably do it now by myself in like 8-10 hours but first time around it can be a real bitch. If you have another car to drive while this is done I would HIGHLY suggest doing it yourself - it's a deeply rewarding experience, plus you can brag to everyone that you worked on your engine yourself. Also saving a crap load of money can be pretty rewarding too.
