Valve Stem Tips a little longer on exhaust valves

I was doing my LT4 Spring/rocker install the other day and I noticed after installing one side of springs that the tip sticking up above the keepers is a little bit higher on the exhaust valves. At first I thought I had a problem that the keepers were not quite fully seated, but it was just exhaust valves and was consistant. I didn't measure, but I think i will measure the diff. It had me a little worried. Why would this be? Anyone else ever notice this? Or do I have something wrong.

I forgot how much a PITA these SLP 1 3/4" headers are for changing plugs.

Sometimes the flash-welded tips are taller, as long as the spring installeds are the same I would not worry about the tip length, it is an adjustable valvetrain.

Mine were the same way. I'm curious about this as well.

If there is less than 1" difference it won't hurt a thing

Yep, it's normal, seen it on multiple LT1's now

Hey thanks

I just wondered if for some reason it was something with the keepers. The last thing I need is to drop a valve. Looks to be okay though.

Thanks for the replies seems to be normal by what everyone has mentioned.

Thought====
It is a good practice to smack each valve stem with a 1lb hammer to seat the keepers.

It could be the height of the valve job or the valve length. Either way it's not too big of a deal.

Ah, I was thinking about doing that, I just didn't know if it was a good idea. I did use the wood end of a hammer and pushed down on it with all my weight on the first one that stuck up higher to check if they were fully seated. No problems with doing this? Just tap it enough to compress the spring a little?

Thanks for the tip. I think I might go back and do that--can never be too careful.

True
Ever since I had a keeper come loose after getting heads back from the shop, and ruining an engine I always smack the valves with a hammer to seat the keepers. When doing this on another occasion I had a keeper jump out and land on the bench( spring stayed on-Wheeew) That practice saved that engine.
I thought all shops did this but that is NOT true.

Just smack it medium hard. Just smack it-- sounds like a song there somewhere--maybe not.

The installed height scared me the first time I checked it, until I realized the keepers have a "step" on them and don't fully seat on the barrel type micrometer. I read 1.860 installed height

Also, it could be a big deal depending on the height diff as this would alter the RA geometry if the same push rod length is used for both valves.

The rocker geometry would not be altered by this little bit to make a defference.

I've seen this on *multiple* stock LT1's...
