Valve stem/guide seals.
Valve stem/guide seals.
I am going to be replaincg my valve stem seals this weekend. I am wondering if it would sufficent for me to just replace them w/ stock ones from a dealer or autozone. Any tips?
Re: Valve stem/guide seals.
I am going to be using an air compressor. This is what I plan on doing. Tell me if Im doing something wrong.
Remove all rockers, Hook up air compressor to spark plug hole of cylinder I want to take intake/exhaust valve off of, fill up with air and use spring compressor to compress spring and remove tappet thing w/ magnet, then spring should come off.
Now to get the valve stems off should I just take some pliers and pull it out? And then to push the new ones on, how far do I push them down? Or do I just push it until i stops.

You're right, take off rockers, air up cylinder, use spring compressor and magnet..... Have you ever done this before? Do you know how much of a pain in the *** it's going to be?
I try to do all the work on my car, but this is seriously one of the only jobs I'd pay someone to do.

You can use an air compressor, but you don't have to. If you follow the valve spring swap guide on my Tech Page, it will show you the TDC method.
I opted for viton seals when I put new ones in. If you need valve springs, now would be the time to do it.

You have the right idea, but I would use tdc myself. My locks did not want to come off and took a lot of work on some of them, would hate to loose that seal and drop a valve. Or maybe use both, air/piston.
You have the right idea, but this is a monster of a job. We did my cam swap in @ 12 hours with 2 people working at a slow pace. You won't have to pull the intake or swap a cam, so not too bad. Your hands will hate you after doing the springs. My palms were bruised and sore for days.

Good luck though. I'm just so tired of working on my car I'd rather lose a little bit of money, than lose a lot of skin on my knuckles and forearms! Which is exactly why my motor is out, and it's getting almost every part replaced before it goes back in the car.
