Valve spring retainers, locks and shims part # question...
Re: Valve spring retainers, locks and shims part # question...
I have a problem with this Chris.... it migh just be me and the cam lobes I use but a hardened pushrod (which is just stock with a different case hardness) just doesn't live. A over rev, a miss shift or just more RPM will butcher these things. Pushrods are the unsung heros of valvetrains but they are still important.

That's okay guys. I'm replacing them anyway so that later down the road with other mods, it's one "pinch point" that I don't have to worry about. Besides, it will cause us to spend more quality time with the block.

Re: Valve spring retainers, locks and shims part # question...
OK, I could use some more info, or does this sound right:
I called Crane, they do not recomend the 918/Beehive springs for 600 lift. They did suggest the 10308-1 kit which has the 99893 but with an install height of 1.850. From what I've read that isn't an option on a stock head/valve set-up. Plus even set at 1.80 there could be clearance issues with the SA rocker arms.
To me it seems the K-motion 700 lift springs are over kill on a stock bottom engine motor that isn't going to be spun over 6200.
Is the K-motion the only option then? And with 60K+ on the motor they might be too much for the lifters? And does installing the K-motion springs mean new lifters, guide plates and NSA rockers? Will the stock retainers hold that much spring ) and Ti retainers neeeded?
JB.

Re: Valve spring retainers, locks and shims part # question...
They don't recomend them for ANYTHING they don't sell them at all and dont like beehives at all. That's why....
I've run the beehives at .600 lift and have never had a issue, and i've run more sets than most people.

Yeah, listen to Bret first and foremost.
Can't wait till I can afford one of his setups. You can't ask Crane about some Comp springs, of course they won't reccomend them. That's like asking Burger King if they think the Big Mac is a good choice for lunch.

Re: Valve spring retainers, locks and shims part # question...
Well I got notification from Thunderracing that the chromolly pusshrods were sent... but on looking at the notificatin from UPS... it's to the wrong address.
Re: Valve spring retainers, locks and shims part # question...
yeh, and comp wont recommend the crane set for anything either, so just go take some info in from abunch of sources and make the most knowledgable decision from there, many many people ive talked to think the 918 springs are garbage, and thats why I have cranes but theres also some people that like them so just research it abit before you make a decision, and pushrods are important -this is true, but ive been running mid 11s with my stock pushrods and havent had a problem so if you have the money go for it, but its not really necessary
Re: Valve spring retainers, locks and shims part # question...
DUH, I should proof read! it was a LONG DAY at work!
I called CRANE and their recommenations just didn't seem right. Springs that would require machine work or seemed to light on the spring pressuer?
COMP did recomend the 918s, but also suggested the 10308-1 kit with the 99893 springs but with an install height of 1.850.
I think the decision to go with the beehives for now is the best option. Once Ron needs to go faster he can look at fully machined heads, and a stroker kit, and nitris, and a 12 bolt, and , , , , ,
So here is the parts list for the valve train:
26918-16 - Springs - Beehive
4705-16 - Locators
614-16 - Locks, steel , for 10 degree Sure locks, +.50 for lash cap
795-15 - Retainers, steel, for 10 Degree Sure lock
503-16 - Valve stem seals

Re: Valve spring retainers, locks and shims part # question...
26918-16 - Springs - Beehive = $180
4705-16 - Locators = $40
614-16 - Locks, steel , for 10 degree Sure locks, +.50 for lash cap = $26
795-15 - Retainers, steel, for 10 Degree Sure lock =$50
503-16 - Valve stem seals = $23
Retainers on back order 'till 6/29
Total $328.51
Thanks John, may I have another!!! Bahahahaha.
That will only leave the shims, but I guess that is a tough call until we get everything together and start measuring. I guess I'll have to get a ride into town and pay a premium price at AutoZone. Oh well.
In the meantime I have to see about getting the car dyno'd so we can document the gains... no BS.
btw: the water pump shipped today to Harold so that it can be black powder coated.

Bret,
First, I want to thank you for all your help and insight.
Next, have you found and common or normal amount of variance in the install hieght that required shims? Reason I ask is because I see shim kits that have .015, .030 and .060 in them. ( Don't worry Ron, I'm only trying to spend $25 more of your money and save a trip to the parts store).
Ron,
I think after this we have all the parts, gaskets, sealers, fluids (expect BEER) covered.
I think all that is left is to get the spring height checker and hub installer from Project (and of course, BEER)!
The Street Lethal club is getting ready:
Greg will have sawsall charged,
Jason will have his hammer polished,
Harold will have his magnet,
Steve is ready to scrub in for the surgery,
Tom has the foam padding for the lift.

Money: In the great scheme of things, no problem. The job needs to be done.

I guess you guys will relegate me outside again ti manually spin the electric fan blades to retighten the rubber bands. Well I'm smarter this time. I'm bringing my portable drill...
Then again, maybe I'll find something to spray paint black... since I can hardly bear watching you guys rip asunder the engine compartment. Ugh!
