Valve Job

I have a 2nd set of heads that a bought for my car for when I do my heads and cam in Jan. I bought them because I didnt want to have the car tied up in the shop while Im waiting for a mahine shop to finish work on the heads etc...

So I was going to send these heads I bought into this local shop. I was thinking of having them do a 5 angle valve job, and make sure the heads are true, or have them re surfaced. Plus have them put the correct springs and retainers to match the new cam.

So I was wondering what would be the difference from me having them do a 5 angle axis valve job, and me just buying aftermarket manley valves? Which would be better and why?

Off topic question......

These heads I bought for my car, are different then the current heads I have on my 97 currently. They are stock, and LT1 heads. But the combustion chambers look more like the LT4's . What car did these probably come off of? Vette?

Dude sorry but your question doesn't make sense, a valve job is done to the head seat, a 5 angle ussually helps a lot with low/mid lift numbers & helps spread the airflow out into the cobustion chamber at different angles to get the most flow, it also helps airflow by making a smoother air entry into the cylinder, its like lines of resolution, the more you have of them the smoother the transition is.

Oh ok. I miss understood the concept. I always thought a valve job was them actually maching the valve , to increase air flow. TY for your info.

well when you do a valve job you also do the valves, make the angles & put a back-cut you desire depending where you want to concentrate the flow, 30* back cut is very common, that is done to the valve itself.

Honestly, just get a three angle done and have the heads milled enough to true them. My three angle cost me $175, and milling was about $100 for the first .010, and fifty for every additional .010.

If I remember correctly, on the intake valve there is no diference in the machining done to the intake side, just two angles on the exhaust. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, if your chambers look diferent someone has probably pocket ported those heads before. Got any pictures?

Ok i took a pic of the heads, mainly the combustion chambers. Dont know if you read the post before. But Im trying to figure out what car these heads came off of. Because these heads have the smaller chambers like the lt4's. And I looked at them , and they have never been ported, and doesnt look like there has ever been any work done to the chambers because they are the same ruff texture as the intake and exhaust ports.

I got this number off the top of the heads, couldnt find jack on it.. 10207848

yea I didnt think they were LT4 castings. When I take the heads in for the valve job, they should be able to tell me the CC right?

Most shops can, especially if you go to a shop that does some high performance work.

Looks like someone spent some time cleaning the chamber, but it looks stock to me From what I can see the intake valve hasn't been unshrouded, which is the first place most people would start in my opinion.
