Valve Cover Question.. Why are the holes in the back?
Valve Cover Question.. Why are the holes in the back?
I just bought some SBC valve covers that are made to fit the LT1 engine because of the notch for the alt. The problem is both holes are at the back of the motor. Shouldn't one be towards the front for the oil filler? My second question is how do I attach the oil filler when there are no threads in the valve covers? My last question is if I dont want to use the PCV valve running from the throttle body to the valve cover what do I put in its place? Thanks for the help. -Matt

If the holes are in the rear and you want them in the front, switch the covers side to side :blah:
You need a push in oil cap. It doesn't screw in at all, just has a rubber seal.
If you don't want to keep it emissions legal and prefer to smell oil, just stick a breather on the valve cover and plug the port on the TB.

No, neither valve covers can be spun around. As you guys mentioned the one that is notched for the alt., and the hole is in the rear, I cannot change. The driver's side valve cover cannot be spun around because then the bolts would not line up. The bolt holes are not directly in the middle of the valve cover, they are slightly down on one side. There for it only sits one way, which makes the hole in the back on that side as well. Tell me if I am missing something hear. My other question is the breathers are also oil fillers correct? Thanks for the replys.
Re: Valve Cover Question.. Why are the holes in the back?
It sounds like you may have gotten a set of covers that the person doing the notch mod to didn't pay attention to which cover he was doing the cutting on. I don't think I've ever seen a set of aftermarket covers for an LT1 where the holes in each cover were both at the back. You're right about the bolt holes being off center: it's possible that the guy cutting them didn't take notice of this and just assumed the covers could be rotated, like others have suggested. As far as there not being threads in the holes: that means they're designed to use push in style breathers. Anytime you want to put oil in the engine just use a funnel in place of the filler neck. You can use breathers in both valve covers, (to eliminate the stock breather tube that runs to the throttle body), or you can keep things functioning like stock by installing one of these:

Either way will work fine.
