Question Is it a V6 or V8?

Ok i just went a put a down payment on a 1995 Trans Am F-body....But it regesters 115...I had a 1994 Camaro V6 before i bought this is I though that maybe it was a Firebird body with a LT1 in it...Because the people I bought it off of told me that it has a brand new Lt1 in it and belive me it runs like it does. Its a A/t and when you go from 1st to 2nd it will cross pulm sideways with you...but see i have to go pick it up saterday and i havnt see the title to it to see if it says Firebird or T/A but anyways it has the T/A front end but it has a Firebird hatch. It says Trans Am in the rear lights and Trans Am on the side of the doors but i know that you can put that on there..because i put Z-28 sighns on my Camaro V6..So is it a Firebird body or what??? Thanks

welcome aboard.
The easiest way to check is to pop the hood. I'm assuming you dont know what an LT1 engine looks like and if so, the best way I can describe it is that the LT1 fills up every square inch of that engine bay. You won't have all that extra space you see in the V6. Have fun with your new car.

It should look alot like this (except without all those nice accessories):

ps: I wouldn't admit you put z28's badges on your v6 if i were you.

Maybe it was a v6 that they did an engine swap in. If it was a stick you could check to see if it has a T-56 transmission in it but i just checked the post and it says automatic. Well, if it is a trans am, if i am not mistaken, then the speedometer will go all the way to 160. I am pretty sure the V6's don't. But anybody feel free to correct me if im wrong.

Chris...yeah my V6 camaro only went to 115 so that why i though it might be a V6 body. I dont belive it would go all the way to 160 but i dont know this was the first time for me to even seat in a T/A and i loved it...i know my uncle has a 2002 Camaro Z-28 and it only goes to 155 and my friend had a Z 99 that we only could get to do 155..But i mean if it is a V 6 body ..that dont mean anything bad does it ebcause the bodys are just about the same airnt they??

V8 4th gen could have the 115mph speedo. You had to check the Z-rated tires option to get that nifty 155mph one

The "up-level spoiler" also started as an option for the TA in the first couple of years. What year is this? :edit: oops, didn't see you mentioned it was a '95, the spoiler was still an option then though.

Look at the VIN, if it has the engine code "P" in it, it came with the V8.

Feel free to correct me if i am wrong but didnt the v6's come with a different transmission and rearend? Therefore would not be suited for LT1 power? Just a suggestion.

It could be a Firebird Formula, they have the firebird body with the TA engine. I don't know about the gauges though.

Correct. The only other problem some people might have with that is there is a speed limiter to go with the speedo This can be taken care of with an HPP, tunercat, LT1_Edit, or a mail order program when you install the heads and cam It's most likely a TA, they just didn't load up on the fun options. As long as there is that P in the VIN it should be genuine. There are also a whole list of RPO codes you could check out in the glovebox if you were so inclined. The other option most people seem concerned with on the A4 is what rear gear ratio it has, look for 1, 2, D, OD on the shifter console for the 3.23 gears. The 2.73 geared cars omit the 1st gear select.

I think the biggest difference in the transmission is the gear ratios. The rearends are the same with the exception of the open differential and drum brakes.

It could be a Firebird Formula, they have the firebird body with the TA engine. I don't know about the gauges though.
It has all the markings of a TA, I would have no reason to disbelieve it. Most people are not willing to go through with the hassle of installing the front bumper cover of a TA, especially since it's so ugly

Yeah, thats true. I didn't catch the part about the TA bumper. I guess that is why no one else suggested it was a Formula.

Insurance?

Hey, I'm curious, what insurance going to run on that beast?

Back in the day when i was your age, insurance was so insane, it made no point in getting a car like that because insurance would rape you silly. (still does, but not to the sum of several gran a year).

The "P" Buttercup speaks of is in position 8 of the VIN. If it has a "V" in position 5, it is a Formula or T/A. An "S" in position 5 would mean it is a regular Firebird.
If it has RPO code QMT in the glovebox code for the non Z-rated tires, that would be why you have the lower top speed cluster.
