Used 97 LT engine worth the money?

I have to replace the engine in my 97 Z28.
It has a rod knock I found a 97 LT1 with 79,000 miles.
They want $1350.00 for it not sure if it comes with all the acc or not.
Is it worth it? I think it is.
One other thing I could do is to try to find an LT4 out of a corvette.
but then I have to reprogram the computer right?
Also can anybody tell me where thing's need to be disconect at?

Thanks,

Chris G.

oh ya... any 96 6 speed vette is lt4. It will run fine on you stock program, but dont expect a miracle in terms of power in a stock lt4 format. The lt4s shine when you start playing with the cyl heads, and are a good base to build a motor from since they are 4 bolt mains.

Things to disconnect...for removing the engine?

I paid 600 + shipping for a 46,000 mile, CC 306 cammed LT1.. From oil pan to intake.. Everything was there. I had to replace a few sensors when I got it, and it had 3 bad 918 springs on it that were broken. I put a set of EX612s on and have around 1,000 miles on it. So far so good.

Yea need to know where to disconect the brake lines fule lines.
I'm taking it out the bottom with the transmission.
So I need to know what needs to be disconect and where.
So it sounds like it is worth the money for the engine because it is coming from around Orlando florida and I'm in west palm about 300 miles south.
comes with a 99 day warranty on it too.
I don't think I'm going to waste too much time tomarrow in finding an LT4.
it seams that the LT1's are far and few between and they range from about $1500 to $3500 and I can get a reman from autozone for $2000 + $600 for the core charge. I want to keep my old engine.
That way I have one to build over some time and make it sweet.
So does this sound like a good plan to you?
That way when I rebuild my engine I know what I got.
You never know with a reman.
Thanks,
Chris G.

Why not just get new block? You can find em for 200 or so. Then take and have it machined. Probably run you about 1500, but its basically brand new then. 1350 with that many miles seems a bit pricey but theres a ton of options out there. Heck sometimes on here you can find guys selling 355 or 383 blocks for sale pretty cheap.

You are 100% correct, my mind was still on my cars engine, brain freeze. I edited my original post.
Any 1996 6 speed vette is an lt4. Sorry about that.

As for pulling the engine out the bottom.

Fuel lines at rails. Brake lines from ABS unit. Struts from top. Sway bar. All wiring from engine. All coolant hoses to engine. Driveshaft. Torque arm front mount. Alternator, belt. Sure im forgetting some things. Just see what is attached and take it off. You can leave the AC condenser, radiator, fans etc all up front.

Your tha man! Thanks
getting the engine tomarrow 97 LT1 79,000 miles no at,smog,ac,ps.
But it will come with the full engine harnes and computer .
Now does that sound like a good deal for 1,350?
Then the Tax brings it to 1,431 to my door.
the cheapest I have seen them by me was 1,500 with 87,000 miles on them.
Could not find the LT4 by me only in CA and that would be more than 1,300.
Let me know what you think of the deal.
Thanks to you all.

Do they have proof of the 79K miles? If they don't, then I wouldn't buy it for that price.

OR, you can always get the VIN derivative off the engine and run a carfax on the VIN.

Here's where you find it.

Re: Used 97 LT engine worth the money?

good deal thanks madwolf.
My uncle used to work for the slavge yard so I know they are honest.
But I will check the carfax out.
Carfax came up witn nothing on my car but it was in an accident through.
guess it was not reported
By the way how far up do I need to jack the car up to get the engine out the bottom. I have to put my BMR k member in so I guess after the old engine is out I have to put it int the new k member and then use my engine puller to pull it up into the car? and where would I connect the chans to?

Thanks agine

Re: Used 97 LT engine worth the money?

Ok so yesterday I got the engine.
got the computer harnes I think uncut I have to see.
I also got that $$$ ac compressor, alt,ps pump, exaust manifolds, and the smog pump too.
To my door with 79,000 on the motor for 1,431.00 with TAX 1,350.00 before.
It cam out of a firebird.
I hope it came out of a W6 300 HP
If it cam out of a W6 with my exhaust it would have 330HP.
But what makes the W6 have 300HP to the Z28's 285HP

Thanks,

Chris G.

Re: Used 97 LT engine worth the money?

It's the ram air and exhaust that makes more HP on the WS6. The engine itself is exactly the same. Congrats on the new engine... now go get'r runnin'!

Re: Used 97 LT engine worth the money?

You know it.
I have to get an all data print out on how to take it out.
Does any body or you know how high I have to get the car off the grown to drop the engine with the K member?
And a guy I use to work with said to take the transmission out first.
Does this sound right to you?
Then what mate the new engine up to the old transmission out of the car and bring it up that sounds hard to do out side my house.

Thanks agine,

Chris G.
I'm exicided to drive my car agine
