URGENT is it okay to put the DEX cool in my car??

I am changing over from green coolent. I have drained the radiator and the drivers side block plug. filled it all up with water and drained it again the water looks near perfect clear witha little faint green tint can I go ahead and add the dex cool or do i need to drain the pass block plug it looks hard to get to. in between i let the car run with all water for about 5 minutes to get the water all in the block waht do you think?

You gotta stick with green. It has something to do with the aditive that makes dex-cool different. What ever that is coats eveything and that helps it cool and last longer. The green stuff removes that aditive and dosnt allow to redeposit it back into the cooling system and it wont work right. Make sure you change it every two years.

Ill be switching to green in a year or so.

I wouldn't have a problem changing a car from green to red but the slightest remaining green will completely ruin the red stuff. I'd do a complete flush, probably chemical first and extensive water rinse later. If you have been using green, stay with it. The only possible downside is more wear on waterpump seals due to the silicates. My own personal sehedule is 2 yrs for green 3 for red. I don't think the stuff is really good for 5 years. IMHO.

I would stay with the green if that is what you have now.
No telling what problems I may run into down the road.

The dex-cool is basicly the same as the green but the Dex-cool is a long life coolant. If I were you I would do 25/75 mix mostly water and get some water wetter or purple ice. I've had both in my car and good results with both. That's just what I did and it worked for me. Use the Dex-cool and the additives and you'll be happy with it since it doesn't get that cold in the Dallas area. The more water you use the better it sucks up the heat better. Also use the filtered water without the added minerals instead of the distilled. The distilled water creates ionization of your coolant system.

You asked which we would use. I would go with the Dex-cool. It's what came in our cars, and it works well.

Edit: By our cars, I mean '96's.

I changed over 4 months ago to dex-cool. No problems at all but make sure that the whole engine and radiator is completely clean. And dex-cool was factory put into 96 and up. It will be completly fine for the 93-95. I would like to ask though is it okay to run 75 water to 25 coolant?

It all depends on where you live. If it gets 15* or less I pesonally wouldn't do it. But in most of the South and parts of the West you shouldn't have a problem.

First to clear up a little confusion on Camaro's, 93-95 came with "green" from the factory. I believe (but may be wrong) that Firebirds had dex-cool from 95+.

As for your situation, i would try to get all of the "green" stuff out. When I switched over, all I did was open the drain on the radiator, start the car, and run water in the fill on the radiator with a garden hose at the same rate the water came out. After the car had warmed up I let the water run for a while and it ran clear.

And finally, in theory you can mix the "green" stuff and dex-cool. The only difference between the two is the additives put into them. Dex-cool is long-life coolant (at least longer that "green") so if you mix the two you basically void the advantages of dex-cool.
