Update on my heads (cracked guides)

I've gotten a few pm's asking what happened to my heads so I figured I'de post this up to answer everyones questions. 15 out of the 16 guides are cracked on them. The machine shop that I had check out the heads believed that they were cracked when the new guides were put in since there aren't any hone marks on them so they most likley pressed them out to size them to the valves. These heads will be for sale as soon as I get them back with pac1518 springs on them incase anyone is interested. They just need to have new guides put in them and have a small crack in the pushrod pinch area welded up. I'm not posting this up to bash Lloyd or argue with anyone on whos fault it is.

Pics are in here

Are there any markings to signify whether the springs danced around? That'll crack guides in a big hurry.

They said they could tell the lock was moving up and down on the valve stem so it was getting valve float. I don't see how the springs could dance around in the seats though since its a tight fit. Also my 918's lost quite a bit of pressure, one of them lost 28lbs in 4000 miles, so either I got a bad batch of my cam is too agressive for 918's.

Good luck with your new setup. Any idea what it's going to consist of? I hope the next company takes care of you.

Yep I'm pretty sure, but I'm not going to say anything until I'm 100% sure though.

Thanks for sharing the information. I've been wondering what the bottom
line was with the loose valves. I've only had new guides installed in two
sets of heads and it was actually bronze liners and not new guides.

The bronze guide liners are pressed in, expanded with a roller burnisher
and then honed to final size. It makes you wonder what was done to crack
the guides. If you ever find out let us know.

I just had liners put in, not whole new guides sorry for not being clear. They said there were no hone marks on them, so my liners were most likley put in and sized by broaching (I think thats the word they used someone correct me if I'm wrong) them which is basically like forcing a ball bearing through the guide to make it bigger, which most likley cracked the iron guides.

All this talk about these 918 beehive springs is making me nervous..... Mine have about 3k on them. But I can not say I have had a problem yet 'knock on wood'.

Sorry for the bad luck, I have never liked a behive. It sucks you had the problems. Good luck with the new set-up

Did the people that did the guides the first time offer to help you out? I would be a pissed MF if my stuff took a dump @ 4,000 miles

Who did this head work???

#1 - I have installed thousands of bronze liners and have never cracked a guide...and then to do it to all of them, and not see that you have messed up, then send it out to the customer??
#2 - They went to final size with the broaching rod To not hone your guides to final size to put the right crosshatch and clearance in is truly amateur hour...

FWIW, it wasn't valve float.... when the valve is not controlled by the guide laterally lots of odd things can happen to make the valve dance around with the spring and retainer.... now the 918's could have been at fault if they were the 2006+ examples from Comp, but it's hard to say what happened here with all the unintended valve movement caused by the guide.
