Unplugging the O2s

Well, I've been having problems with them for a few months. I think the longtubes are causing a bad reading.

Once in closed loop and at idle, my car even gives a popping sound. I assume this is because the thing runs so rich. My gas milelage sucks as well.

Anyways, I unplugged them this afternoon and noticed the car stayed in open loop...just like I thought it would. When in open loop, the car runs and idles great. Is there any harm that unplugging the O2s can do to my car? long term or short term damage? How exactly will my car figure the a/f ratio without the O2s plugged in?

Thanks

Its not going to hurt anything, you'll just get even "suckier" gas mileage b/c the computer will not be compensating for a/f ratio. If the exaust is popping and you just got done installing the plugs and wires I would look back over myt work and see whats going on.

Thanks for the TTT

I've done the wires and plugs recently and they are fine. I've heard ppl report faint popping at idle when the O2s are screwd up, so I think it is just them causing the problem because it doesn't do it in open loop.

So the car will run even richier with the O2s unplugged?

Hey man I did my LT's about 1 year ago exactly and havent used any O2's sence, people said ohhh your car wont run or it wont perform, man Im here to tell you it will scream and it will fly, and that also got rid of my stumble, O2's can only do so much anyhow and when you mash on it, your computer doesnt even use them anymore, it has its own default program which runs better than the O2's metering system!

Did you have them deleted Wildwill or just discount them? I am seriously leaning towards unplugging them and being done with it. Thanks for the info on your car.

Does anybody have any horror stories about something happening with their's unplugged?

I will give it a try. The car probably can't run much richer than it already does.

When the computer can't read the O2 sensors, it defaults to a table that is preprogrammed to be richer than the car would normally run. It's designed to protect the motor.

Try running a datalogger on the car and see exactly what's going on with the O2 sensors. Some long tube headers place the sensors too far away from the cylinder head and they don't read correctly.

Wanna bet?? Like Chris said. If the ECM can't read the sensors it defaults rich to protect the motor. I personally saw my father-in-laws 4cyl Grand Am get 10 MPG when the O2 sensor crapped out. So your Camaro will get real bad milliage with no O2 sensors. It's kinda hard to troubleshoot your car from my computer but I would start by getting an Autoxay scanner or one like it to do a live scan. This can tell you a lot. You would be surprised at what your computer monitors.

TTS makes Datamaster which your run on a laptop. It works great, but you need a laptop to use it effectively.
