Question Are underdrive pulleys safe?

Been considering doing a pulley swap for a while but I have been hearing different things. Is it true that the pulleys you get from companies lile March (just pulling a name out of my head) are cheaply made and unbalanced? Do you have to replace all the pulleys or just the crank and alt pulley? In doing this mod do you shorten the lifespan of things like the alt and power steering pump?

Thanks

I have the March crank pulley only on a 6spd. It still charges fine. The alternator, a/c and power steering pump turn slower which is easier on them. With the March pulley you still have to bolt the original balancer back on with it. ASP has one that doesn't need the balancer. I would go that route if I was doing it again.

The March piggyback pulley I have on now runs just fine, balance is perfect. I would watch out for no name brand pulleys.

I bought an ASP but I have not put it on yet. I bought it cause it will be lighter than the piggyback style which is heavier.

This March pulley with hardware will be for sale for $50.00 shipped if you are interested.

Pulleys are safe to run.
They are a tremendous pain to remove sometimes though.

When you say by piggyback do you mean it like its bolted on to the damper? Is the ASP a complete replacement for the stock damper?

Piggy back means it actually bolts where the balancer used to, then the balancer bolts to it. IMO though, pulleys on an Lt1 are a waste of money. Most of the drag coming from belt driven accessories comes from the water pump and the power steering. Lt1's lack of a belt driven WP kind of defeat the purpose of ud pulleys... Ive yet to see anyone with real world gains with them to be honest.

Yes they do not provide big gains, but every little bit adds up in the end. The one thing I have noticed is less loss from the AC compressor running the AC under NON WOT, this has to help the MPG some. Still cools fine, I think there are other minor benefits from the pulley.

I believe the ASP has proved to be a power gainer on the dyno..

The old piggyback ones are worthless tho, IMO.

The other accessories definately use power to be turned. I saw a Hotcam car pick up 12 rwhp and 8 rwtq by removing the belt. I'm sure you won't gain that much with the pulley but as said above everybit counts. The other benefit that I got one for is not spinning the power steering pump and alternator so fast when shifting above 6k.

Poor bang for the buck IMO; use the money elsewhere.
