It's going to take you hours of reading, learning, testing, etc. Depending on how much your time is worth plus tuning software/cable, now weight that against what a mail order tune runs. Unless you want to have pride and/or experience of tuning it yourself.

A/F ratio gauge would help as well. Doesn't hurt to use 1/4 mile runs to track your progress too.

I've though about his as well. I am just now getting started in learning and understanding my own data logs and all the ridiculous amounts of info that coincide with that. A mail order tune would be best first...then as you learn more and build your skills and knowledge you can begin to tinker with tuning and all the additional stuff that it takes. That's my plan anyways.

How many weeks and tanks of gas do you want to spend learning? I've been tuning my LT1 (and about 10 others) for over 3 years now and have several hundred re-flashes and I'm still learning stuff.

It took me countless hours of research and the only thing I've accomplished is a 4 hour session just getting the timing right. If its something you're interested in I would do both. Get a well known tuner too send you a mail order and use the software too compare the differences between the stock tune and mail order tune. Little steps will go a long way.then you can fine tune the mail order through datalogging. Good luck with whatever decision you make.
