tube going into intake "bellow"?

hey, i'm looking to do another homemade intake, this time on my lt1
i was looking at it and it looks like some kind of tube or hose goes into the intake piping (pipe that connects mafs and air box)
what is this thing?
and will i need to keep it when i do my homemade system? (going to do 4" pvc piping into a k/n filter)

I think what your talking about is the air pump hose. If you delete your air system then no, you dont need it.

yea, i think that's what it is
i was looking here http://members.nuvox.net/~on.roz/cars/z28/cai.html
and it does mention the part at the end of the page
i know i need to keep a.i.r. for emissions so can i just drill a new hole in the pvc pipes and reconnect it and silicone around it (to seal it tight) and be fine?
that's what i was planning on doing so...

thanks for the reply markymark

all it is doing is pulling air through the pump and pumping it into your exhaust manifolds....so its not extremely important I dont think.

When I made my custom CAI I put a small filter that I bought at autozone on the end of it and pushed it to the side. That way the air that is beeing pulled into the system is at least clean. Good luck with your project

yea, he mentioned the breather filter on the page too, guess i'll pick one of those up, thanks
also, markymark, i think the air provisions are extremely important
i didn't pass echeck the first time because the air pump fuse was broken and i got horrific scores
replaced the fuse and passed with flying colors

one more problem now though...
i'm about ready to make my intake today (finally got a day off work) and i noticed there are 3 parts to the intake air box
the first is the airbox, the second is the thing on the right side of the airbox (both of which i took out) and then i noticed a piece right behind the headlights, and right in front of the intake (inbetween them so to speak)
what is this?
and is it alright if i take it out
i can't seem to be able to get my head down there to see
thanks guys for all the responses so far

No need to remove that piece.

are you sure i can't?
it would greatly help to make space for the big k/n filter

Im sure you could get it out....I just dont see how it would make a difference space wise. Why dont you put the k&n down in the the box area under where the stock filter box was, like most aftermarket kits do?

that's what i decided to do after playin around with it for a little while
it would've just been easier to remove and re-oil if it had been sitting up top
it's a bi*** getting the splash guard off and part of the air dam off too just to get this big thing in there
thanks for the help
