True Synthetics

I was going to go Mobil 1 with my next oil change but have found posts saying its not a true synthetic anymore. Is this true and if so which oils are 100pct synthetic now?

Welcome to the online newsgroup and forum oil wars. As rskrause asked ... "does it matter"? As long as you're not using some unbranded 2 gallon jug of recycled oil in a high horsepower track car your engine should be fine as long as you change it regularly along with a new filter. As far as I know Mobil1 is a full synthetic in every sense of the definition with the possible exception of the High-Mileage offering (I'm not sure of that one) which might possibly be a blend. As you probably have noticed Mobil1 is used in some very intense racing applications and if it can run practice, qualifying and 500 mile NASCAR races at as high as 10,000 rpm or 24 hours events at LeMans it will work for you. All the major lubricant companies produce quality products that will suit your needs and I wouldn't let someone's personal anti Mobil1 agenda rule out using it.

The biggest reason I am thinking of going synthetic is Ive read it holds its viscosity better where as regular oil will not. Being I live in TX and temps can get up to 105 easily during the summer months and these cars run warm anyway Id like it to be as well protected as it can.

Instead of worrying about composition would it not be more to the point to look for was has MEASURED DATA to support how it works in actual street/strip conditions in an actual LT1???

This is about the only forum I would trust for oil related information. Look in the Used Oil Analysis section. On a forum like this you will get opinions based on advertising not measured results.

Been awhile since I did a lot of indepth reading but I know for a LONG time M1 had pretty high iron wear in LT1s. It's reputation as the ultimate LT1 oil was PURE marketting, it was OK nothing more.

People will say "I had XXXXXmiles with M1 and it was perfect" but reality is others got the same mileage and result with bulk 55gallon drum oils that cop cars were fed. A friend just pulled the 197K mile LT1 out of his old cop car, we cammed it at 160K, heads have never been off. It is going in his wife's Caprice next. In the time he has had it it has gotten the basic $2 a quart Mobil before that we can only assume bulk oil from the police maintenance crew.

If you do research looking for MEASURED results then you will probably choose Castrol Syntec 0W-30 "made in Germany".

Really though as already said, almost anything will get the job done, beyond that is splitting hairs.
