transmission is broken

it will shift into 3rd, 1st and 2nd are fine, but on the 2-3 it acts as if it goes into nuetral.....is it just my 3rd gear that is gone, and if so can that gear only be rebuilt instead of the whole thing, the goal being less money needed for the rebuild??? anyone knowlegable in the 4L60E please post advice.

Sounds like the clutches are burnt up. Since you will have to practically dismantle the whole transmission to change those, you should rebuilt the tranny top to bottom.

good point i might as well just rebuild it and reinfornce it at the same time with better components. there goes $750. It sucks not having it to drive around......

Do you ever get third? How about 4th? Third and 4th use the 3-4 clutches so if ones gone then so's the other. If it's only on the upshift, check the #7 check ball in the 2-4 servo housing. If it's leaking it can cause a slipping in third. Also check the servo piston seals, the 2-4 servo is used to accumulate (soften) third gear, if the seals are leaking then it will cause a slip. If the trans neutrals then shifts into gear clean, possible sticking shift valve. Pull the valve body and check for binding valves or debris in the valve body. Good luck.
