Tranny Problem
Tranny Problem
I have a 1995 Z28 automatic transmission. When i floor my car, instead of shifting right before redline like it usually does, it stops a little short and i get a loud ugly sounds (Not positive, but it sounds like its from underneath the car on the drivers side) and it wont shift into the gear (unless I let off the gas a little then it will). When i drive regular it is fine, even if i get on it, its fine, as long as its not floored. I am guessing its a tranny problem, but I was wondering if you guys knew exactly what part. I was going to take it to a transmission shop but i wanted to have an idea of what the problem was so the transmission shop doesn't tell me a bunch of BS so I spend more money there. Thanks for your help

I think I know what you are talking about...mine did a similar problem. When I would hammer it, it would get stuck at the rev limiter, and if I let off the gas and then kept going, it would go into gear. It would shift normally at normal throttle. To tell you the truth, I didn't know what to do and the tranny shop said the tranny was fine, they reccommended a MSD and after 40,000 miles I haven't had a problem sine. Maybe it was the msd maybe it wasn't. All I know when I put it in the problem stopped. The tranny mount is probably going out as well. I had my tranny shop put a "heavy duty" mount in and all is better with all that damn noise. I have 100 grand on my car, and my tranny has been good to me...knock on wood!!! Good luck. I would try to go around the rebuild for a little while, because for a good stock one it is like 800 bucks, and up to 1800 bucks for a real good heavy duty one. https://www.pro-built.net/index.cfm
here is a good place for a good tranny, so I here. Hope everything works out.

Yeah I just replaced the tranny mount when I put on my cutout on about 6 months ago because it was sagging and the cutout didn't tuck in enough, so I think that should be ok. I also changed the plugs trying to fix this problem, but still it makes this noise. Should I still try the MSD Ignition setup? Yesterday for a brief time my service engine light went on even though i had a full service including my tranny serviced last month, could my problem maybe be a sensor is out? Despite the high costs, I have contemplated going to a dealer to have them look at it
Hate to say it but it's not the trans mount. It's the 1-2 clutch pack slipping. My car did the same thing at first, then it went to pot about 4 months later and wouldn't shift at even medium throttle. The computer will increase the line pressure in the transmission to make the clutches grab at lower throttle inputs, in responce to slippage, to a certain extent. It's called adaptive strategies/limp home mode. It will eventually give you only 3rd gear when it's totally fried. You need a rebuild soon.
PS. Don't flush the tranny fluid!!! It will make the problem worse!
If you want to be sure, clear the adaptive strategies by disconnecting the battery for 30 mins, then restart the car and take it for a drive. It will shift even worse without the full line pressure. Or take it to a trans shop and have them do an electronic analysis. The SES light is probably the trans setting a code.

Jay Dogg that sounds like it could be my problem. I think what I am going to do is take it to a tranny shop and tell them to check it out. Thanks for the info, by the way, how much should i expect to pay for a rebuild???? Thanks
A rebuild will run you between 1200 and 1800 dollars depending on the shop. Don't go to the dealer since they will be the highest. Ask around in your area to see if anyone can recommend a good tranny shop that has experience working on this type of transmission. You don't want to have to bring it back if they do a shoddy job! Have them put in a "Trans-Go" shift kit when they do the rebuild as it will firm up your shifts, and make your transmission run cooler. Remember, heat is your trans' worst enemy. Firm shifts, to a certain extent, will do more good than harm, but don't over do it.
As for the guy with no codes. My tranny didn't set any codes either but after the trans guy cleared the Adaptive strategies and took me for a test drive with him, it was clear there was a big problem. I will read your post and see if I can give any advice.
