tranny, clutch? I dunno

I've had the intake manifold gasket rear leak for the past few months and it's been dripping down between the engine and transmission. Yesterday I think I felt the transmission or clutch slip and I heard a ticking when it slipped coming from somewhere down there. Anybody have a suggestion? I'm gonna fix the leak tomorrow, but I don't know what do about the slippage problem. Is there anything else that could be wrong? I'm not very experienced. btw 95 bird, lt1, 6-speed

Well being a stick and not an Auto, the tranny won't slip, not that I know of anyways. It would be the clutch that slipped.

I'm not sure if anyone agrees with me or not, but I've had the tranny out twice now. First time took 2 nights, 2nd time I had it out in 1.5 hours that includes goofing off.

What *I* would do is after you fix the intake manifold leak, make sure it's sealed for sure

Then I'd pull the tranny out and inspect the clutch/PP/flywheel. What clutch is in there? Stock? Do you know anything about it?

You could try some Brake Cleaner on it to see if oil dripped on it if that will get it off. But I'm also thinking, if the oil dripped down the back of the block, it would go BEHIND the flywheel, and not in FRONT of it to where the clutch is. It's possible you need a new clutch. Won't know until you take the tranny out though.

Good luck with it!

yeah it's a stock clutch. I had it replaced about a year ago. Is it very difficult to drop the tranny without a lift?

No, you just need 4 jackstands and need it get it as high as possible. Don't even try to get the tranny out from under the car. Just drop it and set it beside you if you can. Its not worth trying to wrestle it out on your stomach or or creeper.

like dave88lx said, the trans itself shouldnt be slipping, if it is, the clutch is the least of your problems. Most likely somwthing got on the clutch disk that is causing it to slip.

Naw it's not too hard to get the tranny out. I got some I forget if they were 3 or 6 ton jackstands, I got them for the height. I had the car about 20" off the ground and had plenty of room. First time removing the tranny I had to say screw a jack, screw a creeper, had to get under the car and WRESTLE it out, it didn't seem to want to come out, either the bell was stuck to the block, or the little guide studs were stuck or something. Had to get on my back and fight with it, and ended up bench pressing it down to my chest. ~125 pounds empty, not bad.

Sounds like some driveway fun right there. there is nothing like that initial ohh S!!T when the trans comes loose, after you been fighting with it. Sometimes it needs to go up a little before it wants to drop down. A trans-jack makes this a hell of a lot easier, but it isnt needed.
