Torque Converter (Stall) Hard on Tranny?

In my overall mod list, I plan on running a 2800-3000 RPM Stall, still deciding on one, and I have some other things to do first... But I've heard that since I will be doing 3.42's with a 3 series carrier, a Stall will be hard on my transmission. A friend of mine keeps trying to convince Me that my tranny will only last 5000 miles or so with that kind of abuse, but I really don't drive my car too hard, and the tranny was rebuilt about 20k ago. Also, would it help to install a shift kit?

I plan on ordering a Stall from FuddleRacing, probably spring time or sometime around there.

get the biggest tranny cooler you can fit / afford, and a shift kit is highly recommended. the hypertech chip raised the line pressures a little, so that'll help in the long run as well. just keep check on your fluid level and change the fluid and filter at regular intervals.

good luck!

just like he said...get a tranny cooler if nothing else..the shift kit will help too. i would be more about the rear end then the tranny as far as leaving hard..you wont really leave too hard anyway with a 2800

Yeah, I plan on running a B&M 24,000 GVW Cooler... and a shift kit sounds like a good plan as well. But as I understand it, no one makes a direct bolt on for a 93 because we have the 4L60 instead of the 4L60E. I plan on getting a tune from PCM4Less, then I will ditch the HyperTech as well.

Direct bolt on Shift Kit for 93 Cars... that is what I've heard.

not too sure about that, check transgo's website, I'm sure they make something for it, all it is is a 700r4.

if you do find the shift kit you want, I'd recommend purchasing them from www.bulkpart.com , I used their customer service and had no problems whatsoever w/ my order. email or telephone, they were both there when I asked a question.

I think most/all shift kits are just re-worked valve bodies... you just take off the transmission oil pan and the valve body is right there, you swap them out and you're good to go

It's not quite that easy.... you have to remove the valve body, performs a series of repalcements of check *****, springs, plungers, and drill the plate on your valve body. If you decide to go with a stall, make sure you use all three washers (you'll see what I mean once you get your shift kit). I only used two and now wished I had used all three to give a better shift behind that stall. Programming did take care of quite a bit of it but the third washer would have helped.

Alright, thanks for the correction

But either way you don't need to tear far into the tranny, all the work can be done on a [CLEAN!] workbench.

Amen, make sure it is super clean, grab 2-3 bottles of brake cleaner to clean parts / tools, some disposable rags (I use the box of blue rags), clean ball bearing grease to help hold check ***** in place, and make sure you clean the floor too in case a spring or check ball gets loose.

The transgo kit is easy to install, I've done two the first one was w/ the aid of the install video, second one I did w/ just the instructions, not hard, just a little stressful the first time.

I too would use the three washers on the 2nd gear piston, I've got two in my silverado and it'll chirp the 265 75 16s.

Also, if you plan on doing a lot of hard accelerating, dragstrip, etc, I would recommend purchasing the heavy duty seperator plate. It replaces the sheet metal seperator and is cheap insurance, $16 if I remember right. The check ***** in my LT4 converted s10 were just about punching through the plate.

Thanks for the advice guys... The TransGo kit, says it will work for 93-2002, so I plan on ordering one. It might be a pain in the *** but I will get it done right.

Re: Torque Converter (Stall) Hard on Tranny?

OMG you guys are scaring me.
A GOOD stall is actually easier on the tranny and don not go stupid on the cooler as it is possible to overcool, I would recommend maybe the midsized B&M with the viscosity based thermostatic feature to help avoid overcooling.
On the shift kit go ahead and install all three washers IF you want your friend to say "told you so" because that is a great way to break things.

For the shift kit I strongly encorage you to contact someone like pro-built.net might cost a little more but the tech help is worht it.
