top end rebuild

Hello, I have a somewhat noisy valvetrain and I would like to do a top end rebuild. What parts would I need for this job besides lifters, springs, pushrods, and rockers?

Which rockers and lifters would be the best for my car? I use it mainly for daily driving but I'd like to have a little fun once in a while.

Engine has 141k on it.

Should probably just cam it while ur in there. Will you be paying someone to do the work or do it yourself?

You'll need gaskets for the intake and throttle body. You can probably re-use the valve cover gaskets.

Use stock replacement lifters, they're the same ones that are used on the LS7...

For rockers you can expect to free up a few HP by switching to roller rockers. I would think Comp Cams ProMags would be fine. I would recommend you chane the valve springs while you have it apart. at 141K the originals might be tired. When choosing we springs, consider choosing some that will allow you to switch to 1.6 ratio rockers...

I wouldn't bother camming it...you have to do a lot more than just toss a new bump stick in there....

I really don't want a new cam, I don't think that would be a good idea for daily driving. I will be doing all of the work myself as well.

As for lifters, rockers, and springs... I don't feel like spending over $500 for all of the parts. What about scorpion or gold crane rockers?

It depends on the tune and cam choice. If you don't get too radical you can retain decent fuel economy while making good power.

Either rocker choice should be fine. You will probably need to clearance the valve covers though.

What should I do about the valve cover clearance?

Minor trimming of the cover. It's pretty easy. On Golen's webpage there's a how-to on exactly what to cut.

Is it guaranteed that I would need to trim if I put 1.6 rockers on?

No it is not guaranteed, but I've done a few engines with 1.6 rrs and didn't have to trim anything.

Re: top end rebuild

just gotta get rid of the tabs on the inside.

if you wanted to save money you could prolly just throw the springs that came in the hotcam kit from gm, people are always selling them for cheap and infact i think my freind still has some unused ones he would sell for cheap. he has the locks/retainers/springs if i recall

Re: top end rebuild

You don't have to trim them all you need to do is flatten out the ends with a pair of pliers and they will fall right in.

GM Performance 12495494 - GM Performance Valve Springs - SummitRacingEquipment.com

Would these work for what I'm trying to accomplish? Would I be able to use 1.6 rockers with these?

Thank you!!!! This is the stuff that I need to know.

Can I reuse my retainers and locks or should I buy new ones?
