Top dead center / timing mark question...

Please help me out real quick guys.. I'm nervous about doing this right even though my friends have told me I'm all set 103249872134 times...

I'm in the process of a cam install and have the cam in and the timing set back on. When the timing set was off I moved the crank by mistake when taking off the crank sprocket with the puller.

Anywho, we took out the #1 spark plug and when the #1 piston came back up (compression stroke) the crank sprocket was at 12 o'clock. We then installed the cam gear at 6 o'clock with the chain..

So when piston #1 was at the top, the crank sprocket was at 12 o'clock and the cam sprocket was at 6 o'clock.

Does this sound OK? I want to confirm before I put my opti back on.

Thanks!

When the dots line up, the engine is at #6 firing position. I don't know what cyl #1 would be doing at that moment. Maybe the opposite? (end of exhaust stroke?)

Right.. both #1 and #6 should be up.. i think #1 would be at the end of it's exhaust stroke.. right?

If you are looking at the crank gear and the dot is at 12, then you have nothing to worry about. The crank gear dot has to be correct because the gear is keyed to the crank (unlike the hub).

Crank dot 12, cam dot 6=#6 TDC and away you go! Line 'em up like that and you are fine.

Both dots 12=#1 TDC.
