Took the silencer tube out....

And I hear some sort of knocking? Or is it just the intake being louder? I covered the hole up with duct tape. I also had the passenger side AIR nut off, that could be it, I'm soon covering it with an M22-1.5 oil drain plug. Any suggestions? Everything shifts normally and feels fine, no stumbles, no arching or anything.

A louder intake would probably be characterized better by a hissing noise, so if you are getting a knocking, then I would probably look elsewhere. How loud is the noise? Are you sure it is knocking, or is it more like a ticking noise? Is there anything that looks out of place, unusual rub marks anywhere, or did you forget a socket or wrench in the engine bay somewhere?

Why did you take the silencer if the only thing you have to cover the hole with is duct tape? I would find a better way to seal up the elbow, it would suck to have the car suck up some of that duct tape. Also if i'm following you correctly you are driving around with a hole in your exhaust manifold where the AIR use to be. If so i'd say thats also a NO NO. I say don't drive your car again until you get these things fixed.

If you leave that hole open, you're in effect bypassing your air filter.

Go fit a shampoo bottle to it. ;)

Nope I didn't drive it around. I just had to start it to back it out because of room issues. I plugged it up with the M22-1.5 oil drain plug and the sound is gone.

I hope you ditch the duct tape too. Most people take an old shampoo bottle and cut the bottom off and silicone the piece into the elbow.

I only put the duct tape there so nothing crawls in there before I get a covering for the hole :D I don't plan on driving it around with the duct tape on it.

What vechile did those oil plugs come on? That way I can just tell the part store to give me a oil plug for a .... instead of them asking what I'm talking about.

They came on a 1997 Dodge Cummings diesel. If you enter the information on napaonline.com, you can find the plugs.
