Ok so I got the opti off today among other things.

I took it off and as it was coming off, the shaft that goes into the back of it turned, and then the opti came off.

Then I took the shaft out of the engine and set it aside with the opti. Does it matter if the opti spun like that?

Also - I am trying to get the hub off.

The rocker arms, pushrods, lifters, and everything are out. The water pump and opti are off.

I have my hub puller on there but it just spins the crank.

Is there any trick to stopping the hub from spinning while i'm trying to pull it off?

Shaft? As in dowel pin? That doesn't sound good...

Jam something through the puller as you turn. I used a bar and put force down on it as I used the puller.

that shaft that goes into the back of the opti, it has teeth on both ends

Oh, OK. Non-vented opti... yea that comes out. Can't remember what mine looked like after taking it out.

Look at the stubby splined shaft. Does it have an index spline(or lack of a spline)?. The index should match with the opti and the cam gear.

You must put something down the middle where the crank bolt was to push against to remove the hub, because the hub looks like this. Some people screw the bolt out a little and use that, but you risk damaging the threads. A hardened rod or all thread bottomed out in the hole would work.

That's OK [dowel pin refers to 95-7 vented opti's]
Clean that shaft, and also note that there is ONE TOOTH missing on each end.. that's what indexes the opti..
It can be forced in wrong, so if it doesn't go in easy, it's probably not right....
Are you changing the opti to a new one[ It looks very rusty.... I would change it.. that one doesn't have much life left]

Yes, I think I noticed an index spline on it. I'll go check it out.

I'm looking at my new cam gear here, and I see where it fits.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

As far as a new opti, I'll have to call and check the price for one I didn't plan on a new one but I might...

With the rust I saw on the back of that opti, you better plan on a new one.

Yes Jasons price is good[best] for GM complete opti..
That rust [on the shaft and that you can see in the opti ]is indicative of the inside of the opti's condition.. seems the unvented ones rust up inside a lot.. also the bearings are weak in them.. and can't be replaced[not available]
I'd do a new one while you have it off..

when i pulled my hub ov the other day i just put in a bolt pretty far in and used a gear puller, and put the car in gear so it wouldnt spin the motor over, it was on pretty damn tight, but it came off... pretty hard going on too! thats for sure as for the opti drive it will go in easy when its the right way correct? i just put my cam in and i wanna make sure the opti is on the right spot in the cam.. dont need a miss timed LT1

So you used a 3 toe pulley puller to get the hub off?

I may try that tomorrow
