whats the best way to get back on to its original position?

It doesn't really matter as far as balancing how you put it on. It's there for reference only.

Not sure of a really precise way to do it with the timing cover on, but here are a few thoughts.

You could take a look here and see the position of the dot related to the cut on the crank and install it that way.

You can also do it (or verify the #1 method) by bringing the #1 cylinder to TDC. This is when the cylinder is all the way up and both rockers will be down. (pushrod down)

You could also stick a screwdriver in the #1 cylinder (front cylinder, driver side) spark plug hole and check to see if you can feel the top of the cylinder to verify yourself once again that the cylinder is at TDC.

If you look inside the hub you may see were the keyway on the crank was. The metal is a different color/shade/scratch. You know when you see it.

Thats exactly how I did mine when I put my motor back in last week. You can see where the keyway should be. I just lined mine up and everything is fine.
