Too much coolant?

First, my heater core went out, so I ran a bypass on it. Then, I was low on coolant, so I filled it up using the overfill as my fill point and I topped off the radiator itself. Then I went out and took it for a spin and it went up to 255 degrees. I'm stumped.

Re: Too much coolant?

UPDATE:

I just turned the key to the on position and I did not hear the water pump come on. It is an electric water pump. I guess this means it has failed. Maybe this is what caused my heater core to blow out. Could overheating cause a water pump failure? I don't know what to blame the start of the problems on. The water pump only has 5,000 miles on it.

I would say it was most likely the other way around.

very funny shoebox. you know what I meant.

I was getting overheating from low coolant before the water pump issue. It was because the heater core was leaking. Now I am afraid that the overheating from the heater core failure damaged other things.

Re: Too much coolant?

If you filled the coolant overflow and then topped off the radiator, and didn't bleed it. That would probably leave an air pocket and cause overheating. Check the wires on the waterpump to make sure you didn't accidently disconnet one like I did by mistake once. Oops on me. If you water pump failed, and its a csr/csi pump you can send it to them and they can rebuild it for you for around 60.00.

Thats a fair price I guess. If it did fail, that would be rediculous. 5,000 miles. sheesh.

Re: Too much coolant?

Actually if you were losing coolant and the electric pump did not have any fluid to pump it would burn up/seize since an electric pump uses the coolant to keep its internals cool as well.
