Too cold? Engine and tranny
Too cold? Engine and tranny
I still have my 160 thermo in and plan to keep it in over the winter (as i wont drive it much anyhow)
I also have a 24K tranny cooler
Driving at a constant speed i hold a temp of 170-175 and 110-140 for the tranny
my question is...besides bad gas milelage is it ok for the engine AND tranny to run this cold constantly?
pro's and Con's of this? Thanks

Re: Too cold? Engine and tranny
i mean i know that 170-175 for the coolant is good and is giving me good performance and is safe
but is there such a thing as tranny fluid being TOO COLD? i mean it takes forever to reach 110 and if im cruising it will stay at 110 for a long while and if i sit (idle) or get on it real hard it will rise to 145...(it never goes over 150 EVER!)...is it ok for the tranny fluid to run at 110 for long periods of time? should i look at it as a blessing that its running that cold...i guess my question is, is there such a thing as too cold?

Re: Too cold? Engine and tranny
I talked to TCI about this because with their super cooler, my TH400 only gets to maybe 120-130 (and thats using the transbrake!). On a manual valve body tranny like mine they said it was fine since I'm the one shifting it, but on a normal tranny it wont HURT it per say, but they said it would 'under perform'. Since I don't own a self-shifting tranny anymore I left it at that and didnt ask anymore.
You might wanna shoot TCI or any other big tranny shop an email tonight for a little more clarification on the issue.

Also on the coolant temps, remember the lower the coolant temp the faster your bores will wear.

Re: Too cold? Engine and tranny
i *think* we have bypasses incase it gets too thick in there. it will bypass the cooler until it warms up enough. i dont know if they have them 100% though
Re: Too cold? Engine and tranny
ya i figured after like 10 minutes that the fluid and components are well lubed up and doing their job even if the fluid is only at 100-110. I figure the clutches are grapping their best at these low temps i just wanted to know if it was ok to actually cruise for hours on end on the highway and the temp only be like 110-120..seems harmless..i also have my line pressure set at 130 over stock which is 95 i believe. Many people say this is bad for seals n such..thanks for the inout guys... anyone else ?
