Tired of HOT CAM, what cam now?
Tired of HOT CAM, what cam now?
Well I am just tired of my HOT CAM. I just haven't been happy with the performance of this cam since I got it, so I am finally going to do a swap.
Now which cam should I go over to? I am going to leave my LT4 heads unported (for now, they will be ported this winter).
Now which cam will give me the best gains?
I don't drive the car daily, it doesn't matter how it idles (as long as it doesn't die whenever I get to a redlight), not really worried about how high I have to rev it either.

Re: Tired of HOT CAM, what cam now?
Ive been really happy with the 847. Looks like you have enough gear/stall to run it, and its still really streetable IMO.
You will need new valvesprings, and new tune though.

233/239
Thats what I would go with. Youve got ported heads and intake, so I think you would make really good number with that cam. I've seen people come in right around 350rwhp with the 233/239 on stock heads. Just a suggestion though... the 847 as already suggested is another good cam. Just go "big."

Re: Tired of HOT CAM, what cam now?
Ive seen the cc306 and GM 847 make some cars just absolutely come alive with simular mods to you. I would choose from these.
If you feel like you just ahve to spend some money thought a custom grind is allways nice, but when you have proven grinds like the big XEs and the GM 847 wwhy bother until you get radical.

Re: Tired of HOT CAM, what cam now?
Is your motor stock bottom end or stroker?
You indicated that the LT4 heads are stock out of the box, what about the intake? If you look at an LT4 intake manifold the ports are no where near the size of the heads/intake gaskets so you might try removing the intake and having it gasket matched/ported and I bet you'll see some more power then.
Because even if you change cams without porting the intake you'll still be disappointed.

Re: Tired of HOT CAM, what cam now?
The motor is a stock bottom end. I am leaving the heads alone for now. They will be ported this winter, I will be waiting because of Lloyd not taking any more work for a while, I also calld Phil at AI and he is backed up until mid September, so I might as well wait until winter.
I have considered all of the cams mentioned with the exception of the CC305, it is too close to the hot cam specs for me to switch to it. I just couldn't decide which one to go with.
The 847 is very tempting to me, great power and a lot of people with great results. I have had the CC306 in my old Formula, I really liked it, great power and it sounded great. I have considered the 233/239 but haven't seen a lot of people running it, so I can't make a conclusion on it. The 230/236 is also great, too many cams to choose from. More opinions please.
Which cam will suit me the best for my current heads and which one for when I get the ported ones?

Re: Tired of HOT CAM, what cam now?
out of curiosity, if he does get one of the bigger cams, GM847, CC306, 233/239, besides getting new springs and a tune, will that be all he needs, or is there anything else like bigger injectors required?
formula383
I understand what you said about the heads I was asking about your intake manifold.
I was saying before you tear everything apart just remove the intake and have it gasket matched/ported then reinstall it and try your car out. This will be cheaper than doing a cam swap right now. And I bet you'll pick up 2-4 mph in the 1/4.
And since you are planning on getting the heads ported over the winter the cam you choose now probably won't be right after the headwork. And you'll end up buying another cam.

Re: Tired of HOT CAM, what cam now?
Stock injectors will be super close. Im still on the stock ones, but i know a few other people making less power than me have only made ~350 rwhp before maxing out the stockers. New injectors surely wouldnt hurt, im just too cheap to buy them right now.
