i am in the middle of putting a new timming chain on my car and the chain has about 1/4th inch of play on one side and about half that on the other side is that right or wrong? for some reson i dont think it is right.

 

Sounds fine to me. LT1 timing chains normally have some slack to them, ~1/4" sounds good. You are putting on a new timing SET right, not just the chain?
