It's highly recommended to change the gearsets as well. Whole kit is around $80 at cmotorsports.com

If you're gonna do it do it right.

Change out the gears.

Or, change everything again and do it right when it wears out prematurely.

Bah just do it all, and get the electric water pump too

I'm with Dave.

Pick up a 95 timing cover and an electric water pump, alongside a Cloyes double-roller. The timing cover, pump and timing set together will cost just as much as the LT4 timing set.

Well what about the price added in with the new vented opti?

Quick question.. the lt4 does not fit without having the new style opti? I'd like to keep my stock water pump which is why i'm considering using the lt4 set whenever i get around to my cam install.

Kyzar -- did you buy a normal Lt4 timing set found on the LT4 engines, or did you get the upgraded LT4 HD set? What exactly are you going to be running in this 'rebuild'?

I dont know how many times it needs to be said, but the LT4 HD and $80 Cloyes will not work on a 1994 fbody without upgrading to a 1995+ camshaft, optispark, timing cover, and corresponding parts. It's a $4oo-5oo+ job excluding the cost of the timing set. Otherwise, you will not have an operating ignition system (splined opti drive-shaft is mounted on a special 1994 cam gear -- the opti isn't driven by dowel pin like the 1995+. The 1995 cam has a larger cam snout opening to accept a nub on the 1995 opti).

If I'm understanding you correctly, No, you shouldnt use an LT4 HD timing chain on the stock 94 gears. I dont think it's a good idea to mix sets, and if you're serious about improving your timing set, you should at least consider purchasing new stock gears.

If you want a performance aftermarket timing set for the 1994 LT1, then take one of the following links:

($550 Custom set) http://www.dougrippie.com/drm/engine_components.htm

($399 Cloyes) http://www.moreperformanceinc.com/timgchn.htm

Otherwise, you could try the Lunati from summit ($110)--which might be junk, or you could just purchase a new stock-replacement gear set. It really depends on how radical your engine is going to be.

There's no other way to do it without upgrading the cam and opti. If you're willing to do that, then there are more options.
