Timing the eninge when doin a cam swap
To get the engine in time, I took off the hub with the arrow pointing up 12 o'clock or at least real close, and the gear dots werent quit lined up, the cam gear was at about the 5:45 position and the crank at 11:45. So #6 is not quit at top dead center and if I put the sprockets on dot to dot, it'll be off. So do I need to put the cam gear on with the dowel pin at 3 o'clock and dot at 6, and then bump the motor over till the crank dot is lined up? thanks
Forget the hub position, as it could have moved from it's original position. However the timing gears cannot move, so they must be correct. Simply line up the dots on the gears, like you have read everywhere and you will be perfect. When you go to put the hub back on, line up the arrow with the dot on the crank gear.
So it dont matter if they werent lined up perfectly when I took them off, just as long as they are when I put them back on? Because when I disassembled it, #6 wasnt quit at TDC another 1/8 more turn to the right it would of been, thats what I meant by not being perfectly lined up. Z95m6, i'm goin w/ the hotcam.
it is best to rotate the crank so its #1 or #6 TDC(same position) before tearing off the hub b/c its kinda difficult to do w/o the hub on. it doesnt matter though.. just make sure the crank gear is at 12 o'clock before you put it all back together like you said.
