Timing cover gasket.... dry or rtv??
Timing cover gasket.... dry or rtv??
Should I put a thin layer of ultra copper or will it be fine. It was VERY hard to scrape the old gasket material off so I just want to make sure it seals right.
I just helped my friend replace his, the Helms manual says to put it on dry so that's what we did. But next time I'm going to put a thin layer of Black RTV on it as it's a bitch to fix if it does leak. Our gasket was also a bitch to clean off and I know it went on dry 10K miles ago.
TTT, I put a layer of RTV between the oil pan U and the timing cover and around those edges so that wont leak and I put some between the cover and the gasket (not the block and gasket). I spent multiple hours cleaning the old gasket material off so the surfaces are pretty clean. I just want to know if people have trouble making the thing seal dry???
Man, I'm doing the same thing right now. Those things are a real pain to remove/clean, aren't they?
I've done a few timing cover gaskets before and I've always used Copper RTV on it. No problems.
Also just replaced the oil pan gasket and I'll use some RTV on the front side where it meets the timing cover as well.

Man it's too late now... **** I knew I should have put RTV on both sides, **** **** damn crap! Oh well it came stock dry so I don't see why it won't work dry??? I already have the opti and water pump bolted over the timing cover so I don't want to take it off again. And god forbid if I have to take that dreaded hub off again. I would give a ******** not to have to take that damn hub off again.
But yea, who has put it on dry? For sure next time I will have both sides ultra coppered but the block side is going on dry this time. Good thing I hit the RTV where it meets the oil pan at least I'll have some insurance.
MADWOLF - It seems like every post one of us makes the other is looking for the same answer =) What cam was it you were installing??? The 230/236? Or the 224/230??
