Timing Chain Slack......

well i got my motor together, put the new timing set on, and it seems that theres to much slack in the chain, so i changed the chain itself, and still seems like to much slack, so i changed the timing set again, and still seems like to much slack. I've seen plenty of other rebuilt motors with new chains, and the chains are usually pretty tight with little to no slack. is this just an lt1 thing, Cause if its not i'm very confused..... any input would be helpful, thanks in advance

Re: Timing Chain Slack......

I have heard that if the bock was line bored or something that it could cause some slack in the timing chain (since the distance between the crank and cam would be smaller or something)

Re: Timing Chain Slack......

For some reason, the LT1s seem to have more slack than others when using a stock type timing set. Not sure why this is, but the little extra slack does not seem to bother operation for most people.

Re: Timing Chain Slack......

There are vendors that sell a slightly larger cranksprocket to help take some of the chain. Try moreperformance.com if it bothers you too much. It will run about $70 , if I remember correctly.....

Re: Timing Chain Slack......

i had a inch of movement from a cloyes timing chain with 20k on it. i replaced it with a brand new one and it only moves an 1/8th of an inch now.

Re: Timing Chain Slack......

The slack is to help take some of the load off of the front cam brg with the gear drive WP.
Cloyes makes GM chain and gears built to GM spec. Cloyes offers an over sized crank sprocket for their chain(same as GM) but GM does not offer it. Wonder why(sarcasm)
If ya are running the stock water pump it is advisable NOT to run the over sized crank sprocket.

Re: Timing Chain Slack......

My info comes direct from Cloyes and GM.

You need to re read my post. I said nothing about tightening the chain.
A SBC does have chain stretch just like any other chain.
Maybe ya need to consult GM engineering dept to get more info as to why they leave the chain on the LT1-LS1 so loose. Bet they could plum ya up in a heartbeat. They convinced me.

The WP puts a hell of a load on the front cam bearing. Do the search and ya will see the guys that have posted with the front brg down to the copper.
