Timing Chain removal ?
Timing Chain removal ?
I did search and i couldent find anything that is specific to my question.
When you take off the hub assembly the book say to line up the marks on the
hub and the timing cover and not to crank it over or else you you will have to
line up the #1 piston to TDC to put the hub back on. But when you take off
the timing chain cover and have to remove the timing chain and sprokets you
have to line up the timing marks and it says to turn the crank to line up these marks.
I dont understand how do you do this, b/c it says not to turn the crank after
you line up the marks on the hub but then you have to turn the crank to line
up the timing marks? Could someone please explain because that is very
confusing
Thanks.

So it really dosent matter about lining up the hub and timing cover? All that matters is the timing marks on the sprokets?

Correct. The mark you make on the timing cover is only for alignment of the crank hub (in relation to the cast arrow for TDC), since the crank snout is not keyed.
So as long as my sprocket timing marks are lined up and I dont move the crank after I remove the sprockets everything SHOULD be ok?
Re: Timing Chain removal ?
That's correct. Make sure the cam and crank sprocket are lined up and put the hub back on any way you want. Like RamAir95TA said, the hub is not keyed, so in retrospect it really doesnt matter how it is oriented. It is helpful to orient the mark say at the 12 o'clock position at #1 TDC for reference though.
Re: Timing Chain removal ?
It's no big deal which way you put it, It is supposed to have the mark up when at tdc but it does not really matter. But your timing teeth DO MATTER! lol, check, double check, and triple check that!
Re: Timing Chain removal ?
like everyone has said, the teeth on the timing gears are whats important. after you line them up, when you assemble it, install the hub with the arrow at 12 oclock, although this is really just for reference so that if you ever need to find #1 tdc you wont have to pull the timing cover off to do so
