timing chain damage

I have a 95 camaro with a broken timing chain, I posted up here a couple of weeks ago when my main concern was a bent valvetrain. I took it up to a local shop where they tore into it and got it down to the chain, and they only found roughly a third of it still intact, the guy working on it took a magnet to the oil pan and started pulling out a lot of pieces of it. Now he thinks that when the chain broke, it most likely slung pieces up into the motor, which means he would have to pull the motor, and clean the whole thing out. I really dont have enough money to pay to have that done, but I dont want to kill the motor either. I was thinking that I could have them drop the pan and clean it out, then put it all back together, compression test it, and fire it up. He thinks that would be too risky though. What do you all think I should do? Thanks and if you need any more info, I will do what I can

Your mechanic is not going to say "it will be fine." He doesn't want the liablity if it screws up. I would at least drop the pan to see what's really in there.

I know I would assume all liability, it just seems like he really thinks I need to pull the motor. I realize that there is a possibility that a lot of stuff could be messed up, I just don't know if this is just a possibility, or if it is a probability.

If you broke your timing chain...something is bound to be "messed up"

What RPM's where you at when this happened??? Did you try to start it after the engine stopped running??

When your tim. set goes...your cam stops spinning which means your valves stopped moving and your pistons keep moving.

You might want to pull the valve covers and check if your pushrods are bent.

It was at ~2000 rpm, the guy who built the engine said it had to be a defect. and no, i didnt try to start it back up. I know what happens and everything, I just didn't expect my mechanic to tell me I should pull the motor and everything. Yea, we were planning on doing a comp. test after we got the new chain on to check for bent valvetrain components.

I would say that chances are good that most of the metal would be inside the timing cover, front of the engine or down in the pan. Still, there is the liability of metal going anywhere it pleases. I would at least remove the pan and change the oil pump and screen while in there. Any more would be a judgement call.

Well, talked to the mechanic today, and he refuses to just drop the pan, clean it all up and put it all back together. He says that would be too risky and he doesn't want the reputation. I guess I can understand all that, but everyone I've talked to doesn't seem to think it would be necessary to tear down my whole engine. Now I have to pay to have the car towed again, and probably pay him for the time he spent on it, and I am no better off than I was $150+ ago. I'm just frustrated as hell and now I don't know whether to take it to another shop, or just take it home and try it myself, I can't imagine it would be too difficult, I am somewhat mechanically inclined.
