Timing chain cover gasket

Hey guys, my optispark is starting to take a dump so i am going to change it in the next week or so. After looking at a few things it looks like the timing chain cover might be leaking on the opti...its really hard to tell tho...would this cause it to fail? I know to get the cover off you need to drop the oil pan alittle...but won't that ruin the gasket on the pan...and if so..how would i replace that?

Re: Timing chain cover gasket

Doubtful that the timing cover gasket itself is leaking, that's a rare paper gasket to fail.

More likely that one of the seals (wp seal, opti seal) is leaking.

If it turns out that you do have a timing gasket leak, and the oil pan gasket tears, just use lots of RTV in the mating corners and it will seal right up, done it a ton of times during cam installs.

Thats what i was thinking too...i always hear stroys of the WP leaking onto the opti. If thats the case..do i need a new WP as well or just a new WP gasket?

Well, the WP isn't leaking if the weep hole is dry. When a water pump goes, it goes.

I'm talking about the oil seal for the shaft. If it's that that is leaking, just replace the seal. No need for a new pump, not even part of it.
