I talked to a few people.. seems i can get the cloyes Double Roller for like 80 bones and a CSI WP for llike 120 and use my timing cover and stuff, so i think im going to end up doing that.. seems to be my best option

Wink

Why cant you use a 96-97 timing cover. I have one waiting to go on mine (got a good deal on it), just welded the CPS hole up. I doubt the crank hole is smaller, but if Im mistaken, someone who knows let me know.

To clarify I didnt mean he CAN't use a 96 or 7 cover , only that for a 93-4 opti conversion, a 95 cover is best...

Better talk to a few more...lol
Did you read the posts?
While the CSI alleviates the lack of a water pump drive problem,
you can't use a Cloyes Double Roller with an early [93-4] opti.. you have to go to a vented [95-7] opti and use a 95 timing cover..
[it has to do with the way the opti drives .. 95-7 opti's drive off the cam, 93-4 have a splined driveshaft, that goes into a splined hole in the cam gear,[which none of the chainsets have, even the LT4 extreme duty, which does have the water pump drive, but not an early opti drive..... the Lunati mentioned supposedly has setup for early opti drive.. ]
Hope this clears it up for you..

You need [to do Cloyes double roller]:
electric water pump..
95-7 vented opti..
'late' or aftermarket camshaft [on the 93-4 the 'nose' isn't drilled for the 95-7 opti]
95 timing cover
vented opti harness
vented opti vacuum harness
etc

Yes, a 96/97 cover will work!

I'm running a 97 cover on my 93 (with the vented opti conversion, double roller chain from CMS, and CSI waterpump). Spend 5 cents on a freeze plug for the crank sensor plug hole, or simply leave the sensor plug in the cover (looks much cleaner if you take it out and install a freeze plug though). The crank hole is the same on 95-97s. The picture yall have referenced is just a little misleading... So, if you've already got a 96/97 cover - then go ahead and use it. If you've got to go out and buy one, then look for the 95 cover as the first choice, but the 96 and 97 cover will work too...

93Z286Speed - Mtrhds94Z is right - you've got to do the complete vented opti conversion to run a double roller set, LT4 set, or ED set. But arent you already running an aftermarket comp cam??? If so, the hole in the face should already be enlarged and you'll only need to install a longer dowel pin, instead of switching cams or having yours reworked. But yep, the Lunati set is your only option (other than stock) if you choose to stay with the non-vented opti. Sadly, the lunati set is only a linked-belt chain and not a roller. I'm doubful that it would hold up any better than the stock set...

People have had a mess of problems with the Lunati, saying it has a lot of play in the chain.

Specifically, what are the problems w/ the Lunati unit? I have a CSI water pump and LT4 Hot Cam kit. Planning head work and bottom end rebuild. Since I have a '94 w/ unvented opti (not planning to change!), my options for a timing chain are limited. If the Lunati chain is not very good, are there other options besides the LT4 ED chain which requires $$$ and other mods? In fact, until I get >400 rwhp, do I even need an aftermarket chain or can I stay w/ the OEM LT1 chain?
Thanks!

Contact Cmotorsports and ask them what you should you. As I stated before, they have a TC comparable to the Cloyes but cheaper in price...maybe that's what you'll need...

The cloyes and the CM chain sets will work with the vented optis, but not with the non-vented ones. Neither of these timing sets have the cam sprocket with the required keyway needed to drive the non-vented opti.

Other than the OEM timing chain for the unvented opti, is there an aftermarket tc available? Is the Lunati tc a suitable replacement? If so, what is the pn?
Thanks!

I know people have had them break on them. It caused one guy to have 3 bent valves because of it. It seems there is excess slack in the chain and cause them to snap.

Best route to go I'd say is doing the 95+ swap. But if you don't want to, grab the Lunati and see if it works for you.

Here's a link to someone here that had problems with the Lunati chain set

http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...ghlight=LUNATI

Personally, I wouldnt take the chance on the Lunati chain. At least not until there's more info out about it. So far, the only feedback I've seen has been bad. Just run the stock OEM chain set, if your not going to do the opti conversion.

I will say again. Cloyes makes a stock LT1 replacement set. Part number 3039 I do believe. O'Reillys sells them for $94. I have the set on my car and I am very pleased.
