Question Timing Chain?

I am rebuilding my motor with 143k late January. Im on a really tight budget. Is it safe and can you put a lt4 timing chain on stock gears? If not, can i just replace the chain and will it be ok? Just doin mild mods, nothin to big.

Re: Timing Chain?

With that many miles, you need to replace the chain and the gear set. It's pretty inexpensive for the stock pieces. With a chain that old, I'm sure there has been a lot of stretch, and there is probably heavy wear on the lead side of theh crank gear.

I defintely wouldnt try to put lt4 or x-treme duty chain on stock gear set. I don't think the links are the same size, but regardless, that sounds like a potential disaster.

Re: Timing Chain?

Just get the stock chain and sprockets. I spend 120$ for mine from auto zone. If ur gonna be keeping it pretty much stock you will be fine. Now if your gonna be dropping afew thousand into the motor, then id say GM performance parts.

Im doing a rebuild with hot cam, lt4 intake, ported heads stock valves and longtubes. Will the Hi_Tech for 101.99 from autozone be ok? Or a stock timing set.

You can get the ED LT4 for around $200. I thought it could be had from Jason Cromer for about $180.

Re: Timing Chain?

I dont want a double roller cause then i need a electric water pump and a Lunati is only for 92-94 and i got a 95. So its either the LT4 for 245 or hi tech on for 102? If the lt4 isnt really necessary then i cant afford to waste money.

For the price of the LT4 chain you can just about get the electric water pump and go with a double roller. If that's too much go with the stock replacement - should hold unless you get pretty crazy.

When i got my ED LT4 chain i got it through GM parts direct for just under $200 + their high shipping which is probably $20. I do remember after that my buddy called Jason Cromer and i thought he wanted only $180ish for the set. I would call Jason Cromer.
