Question Timing/Cam Dowel Position

I had to change my distributor seal, so I used Shbox's cam removal/install guide to do it. Upon reassembly, his instructions say that with the balancer hub indicator at 12 oclock the cam dowel should be at the 3 oclock position. My dowel pin was at the 1-2 oclock position. I installed the opti dowel indicator right over it but wanted to know if I would be in correct time and why the cam dowel would be in the wrong position. I had no timing problems before I started. The previous owner put a LT4 hotcam in it.

Thanks

It doesnt matter what position the cam dowel is when you install the opti

As long as you put it in the correct hole, then the timing will be fine

Thanks guys... shoebox-love your site, don't touch my car w/o checking there first.

So I guess my next question is why was my dowel not in the position it was supposed to be? I assume that will not affect anything?

Are you saying that your hub mark was at 12 o'clock and the dowel pin was not at 3 or 9 o'clock? If so, your hub has slipped or someone put it back on with no regard to it's relative position to 1 or 6 TDC. If you had no problem before, you shouldn't after. You'll just have to remember the mark is off.
